RE: The Works Dent Popper? - Yes it does everything
« on: September 27, 2013, 12:59:40 PM »
So I was doing a tank flush on my cb400f tank and was not getting anywhere.  1/4" of varnish and rust so in frustration I add my friend sand gravel to the works party and that is when things got interesting.

Apparently there must have been some limestone or other base in the mix and it reacted with "The Works" making lots of gas.  This gas revealed what now looks like a bondo tumor on the side of my tank.  I did not even know it had bondo.  The sand mix is the 80 or 100lb bag used in trucks to keep the tires from spinning in the winter.

Pretty cool thought I would share.

You're a brave man.

You mixed acid with sand (which unless it's pure silica, has rock aggregate in it).
Then you put it in an enclosed metal vessel and sealed it.
Then the gas it created was high enough pressure to distort the metal.

That's swerving very close to the device we typically know as a "bomb."

I really couldn't understand the post at all. He said he added sand gravel to the works party. He didn't mention anything in "the party" before adding the sand. what did it mix with to cause a chemical reaction?

He used the Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner in the tank. They added the sand which had some minerals that reacted with the acid and formed a gas. The tank was sealed so the gas could not escape and the pressure built up and dented the sheet metal.

This pic may help.  I was about 1/2 bottle of the works with 1/3 tank water and 4 o 5 big scoops of the traction grit.

Yeah, a bomb maybe, but it was sure fun to see the dent pop back out.  I bet if you were a chemist or something you could get a mixture that would build pressure at just the right rate to do this with the bad side effect , aka death.

I have found that pop rocks with soda do a great job cleaning tanks and popping dents as well.

Just the works reacting with the rust creates a chemical reaction and gas so be careful removing tight fitting screw end rubber plumber type plugs from the top, like keep your face out of the way  ;)

I didn't know what the Works Toilet Bowl cleaner was. Someone told me to fill the tank with water and seal it and put it in the freezer to pop dents. I would be concerned with that method and this of popping seams that are weak.

Here is a couple of pictures after I removed the bondo beauty mark.  Just a shallow dent remains. All said it went from 1/4" of bondo to about 1/16" of an inch.

I am pretty happy with the outcome.  Mind you I did not do this on purpose and don't recommend mixing up chemicals in a closed container as "BOOM could be the result.

I bet if you had a black tank and filled it mostly with water and a little air and left it in the sun you might get a similar result.
