Can I eliminate the solenoid????
« on: September 30, 2013, 09:57:10 PM »
OK here's the deal. I was thinking about removing the stater solenoid altogether.
I'm thinking if I were to uses an ignition switch with a key that has a momentary switch.

From my research I believe  it would be wise to use 6 aug wire.

From what I understand the purpose of a solenoid is to use a low voltage remote switch to activate and deactivate the starter via the solenoid.

Can any one confirm this?

Not unless you want to fry all the wiring and your ass.

The starter takes 180amps THAT IS WHAT THE SOLENOID IS FOR

Yes
Your 4th sentence is correct.

Put the screwdriver down and step slowly away from the bike and no one will get hurt.

I you kick start it only I'd say yes. If you want the starter to work it will need to be a special switch because most (all?) aren't designed for that many amps.
My opinion is, if it wasn't needed Honda wouldn't have wasted the money putting it on the bikes to begin with.

I hear your points. And Honda made it as easy as pushing a button on the bars. I don't want anything on the bars.

So... Not possible. Could never happen. Never been done.... :/

If you have an ignition switch like a car with the momentary starter contacts ( if I understand what you're trying to do, or even a separate moment sw, whatever)  then just connect the red yellow wire from the main loom which is inside the headlight ( usually connected to the starter button on the right switch ) to your momentary sw and the other side of the switch to ground n leave the solenoid as is, easy.

I know where to put the wires. It just bugs me thinking I could get rid of it. Less #$%* to go wrong if there is less stuff. Know what I mean. And all the original wiring is gone.

But okay. I'm not going to get stubborn about this one. :)

Thanx guys.

Can I ask you what is your real goal here ?
Do you just want to run as little as possible (headlight, tail/brake light, tach, speedo )

There are some threads describing the minimum wiring without the starter. There is also a CB750 chopper forum.

Great idea for shaving weight off your "Cafe Racer" -- you can probably save 1/4 pound by eliminating the solenoid. Every ounce counts when you wanna go superfast!

Next up: Eliminating those pesky and heavy coils. Why can't I just hook the battery directly to the spark plugs and eliminate the coils?

I was looking for a 10 foot pole to touch this with, and then I found one. Still, it seemed a waste of a ten foot pole, so I took the open can of worms I found here, tied it to the end of the 10 foot pole, and swung it wildly to fight off the elephant in the room.
Thinking this would also work in an oil thread.

Throw away the side cover (useless Honda junk), and manually close the solenoid with your hand. Presto!

If you dont want the button and wiring on the bars, why not keep the solenoid, and put the button somewhere else? headlight? under the tank, maybe in your seat so when you sit, the bike starts right up !  ;)

The seat one is a great idea. you need a timer to kill the starter after a few seconds.wait now your adding to it #$%*

We all ask questions that to somebody else seem stupid.
Questions are good. That's how we learn!
Spaz's question "What are you trying to achieve?" is a good one.
Be clear about that and then see where that takes you.
Let's hear your goal.

You can do it if you eliminate the starter.   The solenoid passes LOTS of current.   Otherwise just stick with what you've got.

Eliminate the solenoid?  Sure.  Just search and find; 100Amp momentary switch (200A rating will last longer).  Mount it wherever you want and run your 6 ga, wire to-from it between battery and starter motor terminal.

Look for battery disconnect switches, too.  These aren't usually momentary.  So, don't forget to turn them off after the bike starts.  Smart people never forget, though.
