That's one way to mount a tank!

Motor sounds good and smooth.

Thanks man! It's nice hearing it run again!!

I managed to reverse my points leads and all I had was a lot of popping out the exhaust and even a few flames. Haha. It runs really nice after it's all warmed up. I do however have a vicious bubble in my front tire and can't seem to get it out?  I don't have a compressor so I had to go down to the AM/PM. I'm sure the people in the store had good time watching me pump quarters into the damn machine. 1 dollar for air !!?!  WTF. After 6 bucks I left. Lol.  I've tried dish soap and some clamps but it still has a bubble in it.  Ideas??  I'm all ears...I thought the thing was going to beat me to death.

Awesome Matt, just fantastic.

Have you had an opportunity to get it out for a spin yet? Just fantastic, I am a little envious that you did 100% of it yourself, including the paint, engine rebuild and repair of the trans. You have mad skills in abundance, and made it look easy. Someday I may catch up, but I doubt it  ;D

Now I want a ride report!

Thanks Nils I appreciate the props. !! Ive had my moments believe me, haha! I think we all do with these old bikes. I think that's part of why we do it!  The Paint is the only thing I don't do though. I am NOT a Paint guy! you cant tell by the pics but there are two small dents in the tank and a bunch of paint chips - all small...  I've tried in the past and I just don't know how to make it come out right. besides, I don't have to worry about scratches! I already have them.
I'll get that ride report out ASAP. I gotta get my bubble out of my front tire. I took it up and down the street and then down the block. That bubble is like riding on an egg! It literally beat the S out of me! These cheep asss tires I bought are, well, i'll say it's like a Cascade Hops compared to Noblehops. lol I need some radials!!

Ya thanks I'll get a ride report here in a little while.  I'm down in Ventura for the weekend. I've managed to get about 35 miles on it  in between rain storms. It runs nice.  I'd like to put 100 miles in and give it another tune up and change the oil and filter.  I haven't had it much over 6k with the new rings.

Good stuff, I appreciated the advice (thick washer) on the steering stem. I just got the frame powder coated.

Your welcome Mr. Cablecar.  Since you got me back to the top of the heap in the rebuild threads I'll give a little up date.

Little would be the key word but a small bit of progress has been made. I managed to find a set of repainted side covers on ebay. I found them freshly painted in the varnish blue with new 400 stickers on them. The seller had them color matched to "his" tank so the color is a couple shades off from mine. Nice none the least.

I also polished my little clutch adjuster/lever ? cover today. It's a shakey pic sorry !

I've also filed the points and timed the beast. I didn't realize how far off the timing was until started doing some closer inspections. The engine roars to life and idles nicely now. I'm thinking this is in part to the Hondaman ignition and some of the final tuning. I've for gone syncing the carbs mostly because it runs so well. Thanks Mark the PO!!

I haven't really had it out for further running because of the record rain we had (9.5" for the month of March), but I intend to as soon as the weather clears up.

Cheers all !!!!

Thirsty,
I am just starting on a similar project on a Cb400/4 mine is also tired and needs refreshing.
Their is an oil leak top and bottom of the cylinder gaskets and various electrical issues. Also there is some rust in places on the frame.
I will start a thread but may well be asking some advice at times.
I also have read and reread your thread have picked up some great ideas.
Many thanks
Chris

Fire away !

If I can help in anyway feel free to ask. This is the first SOHC I have owned so I'm no guru but hey if I can help out no problem. Noblehops, MOMO, and others are around too. Start a thread when your ready and have at it. You'll get the help you need.

I'd say the search function will get you out of most jams. It helped me tremendously.

Tune up day for me. 122 miles. Started with my valve adjust. .002 intake and exhaust valves. Dwell has been set to 24.5 on the 8 cyl scale, and a final sync of the carbs. It runs SWEET!!!!!!

A fella I work with gave me this valve adjuster tool. His brother died some time ago do he started unloading some of his old tools. He was a bike mechanic.  I don't know who makes/made it but it works good! No more fumbling around with small home made tools.

Part number 09917-10410

And the video ....
