ever notice....
« on: August 18, 2006, 12:31:55 AM »
Don't know if its just me but is seems the moment i fix one thing something else goes wrong....
here is a short list from memory:
front brakes seized
stripped oil bolt
bad battery
bad plugs
carb issues
exhaust disentegrates
bad rotor
bad battery (again)
wierd loss of power
regapped valves
bad plugs(again)
stripped stud hole for exhaust
malformed exhaust gaskets

and now to top it all of my mom dropped my headlight today as I was painting the bucket and shatter the stupid thing.
I'm still trying to fix the whole loss of power/exhaust issue.

I can never seem to win;) please tell me theres a point that this crazyness stops!

some days I'm tempted to walk into honda and walk out with a new 919...

That's exactly what I needed to hear. :D
I'm having problems with the electrical, (lights and #$%*) but I'm meticulously going through it and should have it figured out soon.

Old bikes are a great example of the "if it aint broke dont fix it" rule.

Mine had buckhorn bars on it a la an 81 LTD when I bought it, so I put near-stock GL1000 bars on it...being the Genius I am I wrapped some electrical tape around the bar under the left control pod to help keep it in place.

I few days later I realized my headlight and horn had stopped working and spent a full day trying to troubleshoot the circuits, and came to the conclusion I must have a bad ground somewhere due to the age of the bike.

Finally I took it to my local shop, who quickly diagnosed the problem and took off the electrical tape...because the light/horn pod grounds to... the handlebars.

On the upside, they cleaned up the bike's entire wiring harness really well....

I had similar experiences when I bought my bike. Front brake, ignition, carbs, tires... I was dangerously close to giving up out of frustration. I stuck with it and I'm very glad I did. I now have a safe (?), reliable bike and ride it almost every day. I'm hoping this winter I can start on the cosmetics. 8)

Stick with it. There is light at the end of the tunnel (hopefully it isn't a train!)  ;D

Yes, I have noticed but I would appreciate it if people would stop reminding me  >:( ;D

It is a pain sometimes BUT it's still a whole lot cheaper than a brand new bike and in the end when you do get a good ride in it's oh so much more satisfying.

My ongoing issues :
1. Squeaky brakes (now twice as bad with the dual discs)
2. Loose calipers (smack against rotors over bumps - sounds like front-end is falling apart)
3. Wicked bog from a stop under full throttle (no stop-light races for me :-[)
4. Burning Oil outta exhaust (This is a new one - maybe time to adjust valves ?)

Besides the above, I cant complain about my particular bike.
With basically zero maintenance , the bike starts and runs better than some bikes people
work on all the time. It has never stranded me, always kicks over the first time, runs great once
warm, etc..
Old bikes are a great example of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule.
I cant agree with this more.
Prob. the main reason why my bike runs so well... ;D

I'll be Damned! :o
Does this hold true for newer bikes I have a 78 and The clubmans I have seem to be on the thin side of 7/8 so I wrapped it a couple times using hockey tape to hold the controls in place. I'm not having problems with the headlight but the turn sigs.  I'll have to do some handlebar swappin'.
Good Look.

I don't think the 77 & 78 are very different except cosmetically, so you might want to try metal shims or something non-insulating if you like your bars...my mechanic was laughing at me because I had metered just about everything on the bike before giving up....

and will be done eventually.

But for the last few thousand miles I've been gettin where I'm goin',
and a whole hell of a lot faster, cheaper, and funner than my car.

I should really stop while I'm ahead....
I decided to sand and repaint my tank and some other stuff while my bike is apart.

and promptly found a pin hole in the corner of the tank  >:(

just patched it last night with some weird putty stuff and primed the tank today and ran out of primer.....

I'm almost afraid to order my head gasket and change it...

Maybe the whole 'one thing leads to another' thing is down to the natural wear-cycle of everything on the bike. Everything on the bike will wear out eventually, depending on how religiously the routine maintenance is done, but perhaps it should be no surprise that things all seem to go phut at the same time.

I have to admit that I enjoy fettling the bike and probably over-maintain it (adjusted the valves 5 or 6 times in 8,000km, just because...), BUT I have been lucky so far (reaching out to touch wood, again) that nothing major has gone wrong.

There's a saying about boats: "Until you break it, it's not yours!" You're getting to know each other.
Here's my list:
When bought..ran well, just needed a new tire and rear pads! Great..right?
Had it painted...beautiful....withing two weeks, got SUPERGLUE on the tank (don't ask)...then one night, after a few Rum and Cokes, tried to get it off with my Dremel tool (Don't EVER do that)! And in the meantime, my mechanic also dinged the new paint..
Rode well..but started blowing fuses and stranding me...20 amp fuse fixed that, until it was clear that I HAD to find the problem! Found the wire shorting out on the frame..insulated it..fine..
Then there were the connectors that the wires would pull out of, but you couldn't see that they were disconnected....once drove 30 miles home in the dark throught the country because my tail light went out...it was one of the connectors under the seat...And there was the connector up by the triple trees that was just a little too tight, so when I turned the bars too hard, the engine died...
Then, it started bogging..so I decided it need a carb rebuild...after trying to do it myself, I paid someone else to do it right...but it still bogged...Hmmmph! Then in the shower one day, it struck me that that's exactly how my old 2 cycle dirt bike felt when its points went bad...so I checked my timing...my bike was way retarded! Solved that one myself!
So, after three seasons, the one thing that finally brought me to my knees (Last year}...I'd be driving along, and my headlight would go out...sometimes It would come back on if I hit a bump just right, or if I banged on the bars while singing a chorus of Yankee Doodle...after a while, electrical problems make you really superstitious...and gee wiz, lo and behold, later last summer, my starter button stopped working! That was the problem all along! The headlight cutoff switch and the starter button! After I fixed that, I realized that I think it's been shorting since I had it. My headlight is bright for the first time!
This summer, now that I got past that last demon, she purrs like a kitten and pulls like shes got "Fahn Beeg Laigs!" Our bikes are like #$%*y women. They want attention. Sometimes it's like a war. But once you get through all the crap, we grow to know and respect each other, and they become more like a partner.
It's not yours until you break it and then fix it...you're just getting to know each other, and you're paying your dues and investing in both of your futures!

ok, so i've been checking this thread thinking, "yeah, but everythings going pretty good right now."

till last night.  i was putting the new barend mirrors on and tried to sit on the bike to check their positions.  it just slipped right out from underneath me.  barely had time to grab the bars and ease it down.

what do i find when i pick it up?  the kickstand bracket has rusted and torn itself off the frame...tearing a bit of the frame with it.

guess i'm glad i didn't rip the center stand off....yet.

oh, and i ran out of gas in the parking lot this morning....guess the reserve is plugged too.

Yep, I notice.  Bike was running great...inspected, registered and using it for my daily commute for about 4 months.  I was finally thinking about doing all the little details and paint and body work I've put off until I thought I had it "sorted".

Then my Mother F*(k1$n transmission siezed up at 60 mph.  Rear wheel locked up solid, I was lucky not to lose it.  I just stared at it for a few weeks and finally punted the repairs over to a local shop since I would never get around to it myself.  So I went from having a cool daily rider (with 50 mpg no less) to having a project bike again.

Moving in the wrong direction here, but at least it happened in the "off season".  I wouldn't have enjoyed riding much in this heat anyway.

 ;D ;D ;D

i was caught, and photographed, talking to my bike on the last trip...."it's ok, you're doing great, we're going to get you a long break soon and you can cool off."  right about then, my buddy pulled up next to me and his girl snapped a photo.

Oh, that sucks! Do you know why it happened? Did it give any indication of a problem before locking? Glad you saved it and you're ok. That's scary.

Who ever said "our bikes are like old women, and they want attention", has hit it right on. I swear that my bike rides smoother and better after I spend a weekend cleaning all "her" cracks and crevices, and making sure "she" is lubed and greased real well. If I even begin to neglect "her" or "she" lets me know about it. My bike was not running when I got it so I have become pretty intimate with a lot of its areas.  At least "she" rewards me when I do good things for "her".
For the first time since getting my bike on the road, I had a guy come up to me and start talking to me about his old Honda, and how he does not see to many like mine any more. That's when you realize that you have got something special. Something that not everyone else has or can get.
Cheers
Bruce

No warning at all.  Just a clunk in the tranny followed by a screech from the rear tire.  Followed by an "oh #$%*" from me.

I've got a thread in the Tech section I'll keep updated as we get it figured out.

The mechanic split the cases last week and 2nd gear (a freewheeling gear) on the output shaft had siezed while I was in 6th gear, causing the lockup.  Don't know why at this point, but I want to figure it out to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I think it's called "money".  It can slow or reverse aging.  Unfortunately I have to use it in moderation.
