What a freakin morning!
« on: August 25, 2006, 11:07:58 AM »
So this morning it was raining lightly, but the forecast was calling for it to clear up. I have waterproof gear, so I thought, "No problem. It'll be a nice ride home in the afternoon." I left for work on the 550 in the rain, and got about 12 miles from home. It was raining, but I was still enjoying the ride. All was well.

Then out of nowhere, the bike just died. Everything shut down. I figured, "No problem, it's just a fuse." I've been having problems with the main fuse popping, and I assumed it was the same deal. I learned to carry spare fuses, so I pulled over, got out the spare fuses and replaced the main fuse. Turned the key... nothing. I still thought "No problem" and I guessed that some cables were routed poorly behind the headlight and pushed on the ignition switch wrong, causing the fuse to pop. I had one spare left, so I moved some cables around behind the headlight, put in the last spare fuse, and turned the key.

Lights on! I thought, "Woo hoo! Back on the road!" Then I looked at the smoke pouring out of the electric starter on the right handlebar.

That was when my outlook and good mood changed. Now I thought, "SH!T!" I looked around and saw I had just passed my auto mechanic's shop about 1/4 mile or so back. I then started walking the bike back to his shop, figuring I could park it there for the day and have my wife come get me so I can get my car and get my late self to work.

I walked it all the way back top the shop, and now, being tired from pushing it back, and out of shape, and wet, I realized I was on the right side of the bike, where the kickstand is on the left. I went to throw a leg over the bike and put the stand down. I lost my balance, and the bike fell over, right into the side of the building! "SH!T!" again!

Now I'm really flustered, wet and tired, and I went to pick the bike up, but being at a bad angle and unable to get in a good position, I really struggled, and failed, to get the bike picked up. The shop owner and a couple other guys ran over to help me pick it up. Now I'm flustered, wet, tired and embarrassed.

I got the bike in the shop, and one of the mechanics and I got started on figuring out what happened. Turns out he used to have a 76 550 in his youth, and had fond memories of it. Another guy there was looking at the bike, and just smiled, turns out he used to have one too and said it was the smoothest running motor he ever had.

The wrench and I ended up disabling the electric start, but we had to bypass the kill switch to get the kick start to work. We did that, but now the headlight doesn't work either, and the bike ran like crap on the ride home... almost sounding like it was running on three cylinders. I'm guessing that the dropping it made something knock loose and plugged something in the carbs, or a fuel filter or something.

At least when it fell over the only thing that appears, cosmetically, to have happened is the clutch lever was slightly bent. There's no scratches on the mirror, and the side cover is still perfectly in tact.

What a morning.

Just remember, a bad day pushing a bike is better than...  um, well, never mind.   :-\

Sorry you had a bad day.  Good luck straightening it out.

Ufa, what a morning Jef....
But don't worry, for sure you spend all your "bad luck" from the past few years AND from years to come at those right moments.
So, from now on, and for many many years to come, everything will be just "blue sky"!!!
Sory the bad english.

sorry, man.  had a similar morning a few months ago before i had everything sorted out.
tried to leave the bike at a gas station for a couple of hours till i could get it home, the guy wouldn't let me so i had to push it a good mile or so....much of which was uphill.  at least mine's only a 400 though.

Damn man that is rough. Never let the magic smoke out of things  ::). AC goes up in a spiral and DC goes straight up.  ;D

Got your PM on the switch. I don't have one for a 500/550 in particular. I had to canibalize my switch from stuff I had around. What we can do is you send me the switch and I'll install another start switch in your control like I just did on mine for ya and test it and get her right back to you. This could be the trade for the caliper if you like. Not a big deal and I will pay shipping back to you.

You know Jeff,  You might have had a bad day but, those 2 guys probably recalled those fond memories because of you. I hope you get your bike lined out without too much problem. (I used to ride to high school in the rain now and again and then I'd ask to go home to get dry clothes and they always let me. Suckers! "The teacher, that is")

I too had a day like that not to long ago. Sorry to hear about your crappy morning. Turns out on my crappy morning that I had broken down at just the right moment to help out an elderly lady who had a flat tire and no one to help her. So I helped her. That made the day a whole lot better for us both. I hope for you that it got better as the day went on.
Take care

This is the kick ass Karma that leaves a legacy that I am talking about. Remember that little old lady is someone's mom. Give her a hand and if even in secret, someone will thank you. Besides, it makes you feel cooler than a brand new exhaust system. ;D

Tom,
Let me look into it and get back to you. I want to open up that switch and see how bad it is. If it's really bad, I'll take you up on it.

I can pick it up. I know I can. But I threw my back out three times in the last year, had just pushed it down the road for at least 1/4 mile, in the rain, and I had dropped it into a the side of a building. The angle was all wrong. If I could've squatted properly and gotten on the other side of it, I would've been able to get it up. I was standing on the rubber side of the bike, instead of the top side of it. No leverage that way.

All those excuses said, I still should go work out. :)

Sounds like my Friday night and Saturday morning. It has been raining here almost ever day, so no riding for me.Anyway i decided to start up my zl since it hasn't been ridden in two weeks.I go out put the key in and turn and nothing. No lights ,no starter nill.I check the battery its good.got good voltage behind the switch.F****ng SWITCH MUST BE BAD.Go to load the bike onto the trailer, bike and footing decided to give out.All the weight goes on my not so good leg.Well i pull the muscle in my calf ,bruise the #$%* out my shin and pull a muscle in my shoulder trying to keep the bike from completely falling over.Ok sat go to start mt gt380 wont crank over.i gave up for the day after that.
Decided to hold off on bike things till sun morning.OH well could be worse.
