Jeff, I've been looking at this '01 Consumer News re the W650. If you're really interested, PM me and I'll send a copy of the article. Basically, they (and I) just think it's a better bike all 'round. Beter sound, feel, dare I say it about a Japanese bike- it seems to have character.
As far as new bikes go... I'm a humbler person after this weekend. I've been reminded that it's better to know the tool you have before you worry about buying new tools;
A friend rode out from San Francisco- took the long way; about 6K miles one way. We missed Deals Gap because it rained too hard, so on his way out of town, I took him up 151 to the BRP. Let's call it the Mouses Tail. He was on his HD soft tail, and I decided to take my 500 single, but I had him go first so he could take his time. Switchbacks, S's, hairpins all the way up in mostly shade because the trees are so thick. Road very damp in places, pieces of rotted wood here and there, the rain had washed down some pebbles/gravel.
After the first turn he disappeared. I thought, "OK. Thick foliage, the road cuts into the hills..." and I speed up. Nothing. I start pouring it on and after a while I get to where I can see his tail light disappearing around the turns up ahead. I get up closer, partly because I realize if he can do it, I ought to be able to keep up with this glorified tractor for cryin out loud. When he's finally in plain sight I realize he's not even breaking a sweat. He doesn't even think he's riding fast!
I've got maybe 2 bikes I can ride to thier potential. I still have a LOT to learn. Maybe I'll think about a new bike when I'm good enugh.
