Dumb thing I do on a bike......
« on: December 24, 2005, 05:49:57 PM »
Whenever I miss a shift, I imediately look down at my left foot.  Can't help it--it's an ingrained reflex too strong to overcome.

It's as if I'm trying to convince the multitudes watching from the sidewalk and critiquing my riding ability that it was the bike's fault, not mine.

Anybody else do this?

I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

"miss a shift"... a bit technical for me I guess. Can you explain what that is?

well for me missing a shift would be when I go from first to second, but when I rev the bike up it instantly redlines and I realize I am in neutral.  I tend to look down at my neutral light when that happens, like it is indeed the bikes fault.

I have to say I did that a few times this summer. It was my first summer back after 10 years. Looking down at the shifter like some magical sign will tell me I screwed up  ;D

Don't know why but I catch myself doing the same thing, I must be looking for that little gremlin sitting on my shifter holding things up.
I farted and made my son cry.

I have just recently gotten over this.  Only cause the last 650 I was riden on the street had a crapy tranny so it happened alot.  Do miss some on the 360 but never do on the race bike.  Must be the extra concentration/effort.

It must be that same instinct that causes you to look angrily at the groung behind you when you've tripped over a crack in the sidewalk.  You see the same thing in some sports, too.  When a tennis player makes a bad serve he/she will inspect and adjust the raquet strings, or a golfer will check the face of the club after screwing up a drive.  It's that natural human reaction to blame someone or something else. ;)

rairly miss shift, but I find running down the road and pull the clutch for high gear and already in it.  Makes you think, damn, did I miss a count.

I really do look stupid when I do that depending on which bike I'm on as I invariably look down at the wrong side. (BSA gears are on the right).

"why's that dickhead looking at the brake pedal when he's missed a gear?"

what we don't realize it that it's really the gnomes...it's the little people...they mock us...oh, how they mock us!

when you look down they turn invisible and laugh their little green asses off.  :o

I used to miss a shift as a newby, rarely do now, and yes it was from 1st to second.  I found that removing the selector lever and reinstalling it a few splines forward put the lever at a steeper downward angle so my toe doesnt have to be lifted as high to make a solid shift. I used to have to lift my foot from the peg to do so.  Now I use the peg as a fulcrum.  make sense?
