Identity Crisis - Who is Sherlock Holmes today ??
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:45:20 PM »
Guys,

Recently purchased a few parts, and was interested to hear the story of what this owner was doing, apart from several other projects in his garage..

Can anyone tell me
1 - what model of bike frame this WAS before mods.
2- what sort of motor is in the frame
3- what do you think of the modifcations - so far

I have the answers as advised from the owner for 1 & 2..

pictures coming

The motor is a 650 BSA Thunderbolt (UK model)

Frame looks DOHC 750 or 900.

Mess.

Definately a BSA 650 engine.

Gonna agree with putnaja1 on the frame sure looks like a F2. the DOHC 750 and 900 had different comstars and frame tubing

MESS?

;D can't argue that assessment sam

Waste of a good 750 frame and a good BSA mill.

F2 Frame

BSA 650 motor

Modifications so far - don't have a clue where this one will finish but the gear change lever weighs about 5kg, so he should snap the gear shaft when he does his first change anyway, he has also cut the rear springs, heaps of welding everywhere, but overall it may look ok

glad to get your minds working -thanks for the replies - you are now all honorary Sherlocks'.. :)

"Waste of a BSA"!!!only better use is as a doorstop, had to be one of the UK's worst designs until norton stretched the Dominator to 850cc---All right i know you yanks love em but I used to have to work on the damn things all the time and come on have you seen some of the contortions you have to get into to assemble em!

bryanj,

the owner of this is very good at welding and cutting etc...

and the motor just squeezes into the frame by a few mm only - tighter than the 750 does

when I asked him how the motor runs  -great answer - IT DOESN'T -

I asked a simple question and walked away completely bamboozled - here he was cutting/welding/squeezing/chopping/fornicating and he does not know if the motor even runs - #$%* at least I had the sense to buy something that started (it sounded like a bucket of #$%*) but at least it ran...

I wished him the best of luck - have his phone number so may get to visit in the future and buy a rat#$%* motor and  frame - if the price is right of course.. :)

The Bsa had many mechanical "problems" not least of which was the oil feed via the timing side (RH) bush, --yes i did say bush and not bearing. and of course the big killer of Britsh bikes was St Joseph Lucas, Prince of Darkness along with his intermittent electron!
