So, I grabbed the wrong paint and....
« on: August 19, 2006, 02:58:16 PM »
I came out with this......

 :o A gloss paintjob !!! :o
At first I didn't like it, but It kinda grew on me. All these posts with these shiny paintjobs got me leaning towards
something with SOMEWHAT of a shine. So it kinda worked out.

I am gonna take the bike out tonight into the city, and see what people have to say.
If it goes over well , and I can deal with it, it is staying..

What do you guys think ?
Keep the current ?

Or go back to the old ?

?     ?    ?     ?     ?

I'd keep it, helps to show the engine and finned covers better IMHO.  Nice looking bike ether way though.

Teal, You might have grabbed the wrong can of paint but, I gotta tell you (my opinion of course)
I think it looks mighty good. To me, it sets it off. Of course, the choice is yours as you know.

Thxs 4 all the kind words.
I am kinda on the same boat as you guys with the glossy-er paint.
I think I am gonna leave it be for the rest of the season - and see how it holds up.
If it holds well - it stays. If it doesnt - then the tank & covers get ripped off - sanded - then off to the
bodyshop for a pro gloss black paintjob. I really feel the gloss bring out the other features of the bike that kinda got
globbed together with all the flat..
How did you get your engine to look so good?
1. Clean ther motor with foamy engine bright - or other engine de-greaser
2. Go get yourself a box of 3M Scotch-brite pads
3. Get something to sit on - like a towel or even better a mechanix stool
4. Go to town with the scotch-brite pads on the motor
5. When you think you are done - do it all over again (cause it will look better)
6. Every once in awhile go over everything again - and be amazed at how alittle elbow grease can make a  basically plain motor stand out..
What paint did you use?
Ace Hardware brand High Temp 200 Degree Paint
I think my dad bought it for the BBQ  ;D
I am going tomorrow to buy more as a backup ;)

Hey, I paint a bit, cars and what not. I just found out from the supplier I use that
the clear coat I use will go over the rattle can finish. The clear can be water sanded and
buffed out and will look as good as if a professional did it :)
So, if you can find yourself some rattle can clear enamel, spray over your black job with
the clear. Then sand it with 1200 followed by 1500 and buff it with compound and
a buffing wheel. You'll be surprised, it'll look like a mirror.

I vote for the gloss as well. All these rattle can jobs looking good is giving me hope for my own. I can't imagine shelling out serious money for a paint job on a cheap bike.

ProTeal's log - 2:23am CST August 20th 2006

Just got in from a 150 mile or so ride thru the city with my buddy Danny (triumph bobber).
We stopped at a few bars (no drinking while on scoots) to meet up with some girls we know, saw more than our handful
of beautiful woman dressed to impress, and a handful of cool bikes. From all the people who saw my CB with the FLAT paintjob, every single one of them was blow away with the new glossy job. I got to see the bike in different lighting and such , and I am set on keeping it.

Gonna go full bore tomorrow and sand the tank down , lay some nice clean gloss black - clear - then wetsand and buff.
Will post results when complete... 8)

I think your bike looks great except for my particular taste it looks just a little anaemic round the front with no mudguard (fender)

Is this the rule with any clear coat? or does it have to be a particular brand. Just wondering since you make reference to "the supplier you use"
And what compound to use on a clear coat?

I'm not real sure this is the rule. This clear coat I have laying around is from the omni 2 stage system.
I can get you the number off it if you want.

The trim came on the seat when I bought it.
Wish I could be of more help... ???
Nice job.
Bet it took a while.
Nope.
I did alittle sanding to knock some of the old paint down , and sprayed a few light coats, let dry , and repeated. Once all was dry, I reinstalled the tank and sidecovers & that was that...

What year and model bike is that?  I'll try DSS for the trim. I've been looking for that for a very long time.
Oh yeah- I like the gloss, too.
