Cleaning carbs (credit to AndreRA3)

Well, I just spent the afternoon cleaning my carbs as AndreRA3 recommended.

Drain float bowls. Fill float bowls with a turkey baster through the fuel line with a 3:1 gas:Yamaha carb cleaner mixture. Kick the starter twice with the bike OFF. Let sit for 20-30 minutes. Repeat until the float bowls drain clear.

I just did it a few times, actually. It was looking pretty clear, and I wanted to get out and ride. But man, what a difference. I used to have to ride with my choke all the way open for about 20 minutes before it would hold even a 2200 rpm idle. Now, it idles nicely at 1000 rpm after just a few minutes! I can start without lurching, which is nice.

Next up is the brake light switch repair and a new seat and left side cover (anyone have an extra?). After that, I'm set for the summer!

I was trying to find the origiinal post from Andre. I have carb problems as well, and am hoping to get away with not taking the assemble off and individually cleaning.

Sounds like the recipe is 1/3 yamaha carb cleaner to 2/3rds gas. Fill flow bowls through fuel hose, Kick over the starter twice and let sit for 20 minutes, then repeat until the mixture is clear.

Anything I'm missing?

The recipe is actually 1/4 yamaha cleaner, 3/4 gasoline (1:3 ratio makes for 4 parts  ;))  As far as the rest goes, you got it.  Fill the bowls through the fuel line (I did so with a 10cc syringe, others have used funnels, or 50cc veterinary syringes, or whatever else you can think of), and kick the bike twice with ignition off.  drain the mix, and it should come out pretty dark (mine did).  Repeat until it comes out clean (I only had to do it twice, and when I disassembled the carbs later to check my jets, everything was shinny and new).

It makes a world of difference...

Thanks Andre. I'm going to get to work on this afternoon. I tried runing some carb cleaner additive (mixed in the fuel tank) through there, but I don't think it did too much.
