What helmet do you have or thinking of purchasing?
« on: August 21, 2006, 10:08:20 PM »
I was thinking about these for the retro look with the new age technology, and the fact that I could care less what I look like on my bike.  Open face for summer/spring/early fall, and the full face for late fall and winter.  Or I might just go to ebay and go extreme old school and rock the old Bell.

I have both the MOMO in the first picture, and a Schubert J1. I would advice against buying the MOMO. It may look good, but when you get up to highway speeds things get annoying. It will lift off your head because the aerodynamics are all screwed up, and it's very, very noisy. Closing the visor on this helmet actually makes it worse, so i used to ride it with goggles and visor up on the highway. I only use it in the city now.

The Schubert I bought is much better. It's pretty silent (about the same noise as a cheap intergral helmet), and the quality is much better. The size of the visor is huge, so you see a lot more too.
They are expensive though, and kinda hard to put on for a jet-helmet, but that's because your chiin is more protected than with a complete open-face helmet.

This spring I bought a Shoei TZ-R in flat black with a dark shield. So far I've been very happy with it.

I have a relatively inexpensive HJC full coverage.  It was the only one I could find to fit my huge (3X) head and still put my glasses on through the opening.

I had been, and still occasionally use, an open face with a shield. I wanted to try a full face, but wasn't sure how I would like it, so I tried a Bell Sprint. Good fit, I like it, reasonably priced and it turns out it didn't make me feel claustrophobic as I thought.

currently i have a "skid lid" for putzing around ferndale at <=35mph and a full face for anything that will take me more than 5 miles from my house.

thinking of getting an open face with perscription goggles though.  i'm sick of the remove glasses, don helment, cram glasses into helmet, reverse to remove procedure.

A friend constantly harranges me about helmets...I was excited about the prospect of the repeal of helmet laws in Michigan...his point is that you're more likely to be cut off in city traffic @ 35 than on the highway...he may be right...
Hey CMorgan, did I pick up in one of your threads that you're from Mi?

[edit]
on the low speed cutoff thing, i was talking to a guy about jackets--don't always wear mine--he pointed out that sliding on asphault at 30 isn't that much better than doing it at 70

Arai Profile in white.  It's the only one that fit my pointy head.

Regarding color, somewhere when I was researching helments,  I found a series of photos taken from a car as it approached a cyclist riding in the rain on a highway.  The first part of him that was visible was the white helmet-  even before the taillights.  I'm a believer in white helmets now.

yeah if I do the matte black helmet or any other darker color I am planning on putting a bit of reflective tape on the back of it to let people know I there.  I am also thinking of getting an aftermarket LED taillight so the runner light is a bit more noticeable.

The Schubert I have has reflective pads around the helmet, but that only works in the dark.

Just got a Nolan N102.  Didn't want to spend too much money for a flip-face/modular, and fit MUCH better than the HJC.

IMHO new features make it much better than the past few models (i.e. N101e).

Currently have a Scorpion EXO-400. VERY nice helmet for $140us. Though I think I would have preferred a Nolan, unfortunatley there are no dealers here that stock/carry Nolan for me to try one on.

I have a HJC helmet, kinda looks like that Shoei but a lot less expensive.  Just as long as it protects my melon, I'm good!
I would like to get a half helmet like a Davida to sport goggles with but.... we'll see.

I think my next helmet will be white. I wear white a lot when I ride, and it seems to help...not to mention being cooler!

I have an HJC RF800 full face and a Davida 3/4 that I wear on my CBs.  I love wearing an open face helmet but I'm trying to move towards the full face more and more.

My HJC is 8 years old now so I think I'll replace it over the winter.  Most likely with a flip up full face of some sort.

As for color, I've moved from black to silver lately.  Maybe I'll make it to white some day though......

My white helmet is cooler than a black one on a hot day.  Leave it on the bike while eating lunch and it gets a little warm, but not hot like a friends black helmet.  Being seen doesn't hurt either.

For open face helmets, I think this one is very cool. Doesn't fit my head though.

tmht - try your local BMW dealership.  No idea why, but they seem to be the one's that carry Nolans.

Yeah the lighter color helmets are great for lower temps. My silver one is great plus being reflective day AND night!
