Swingarm bolt stuck
« on: August 22, 2006, 08:36:35 AM »
Ok it is a Yamaha XS650 and the swingarm bolt will not move at all.  Been soaking it with PB Blaster with little effect.  Left nut on the end of the bolt so i can hammer on it and it still didn't move.  Any ideas??

can you get a socket to fit nut and then use a breaker bar to get spindle turning ?,   mick.

Tried a pipe wrench on the other side to try to get it to spin free but this thing is really stuck.

have you tried heat? impact gun (as in air ratchet )?and try it forwards and backwards see if that frees it? other than that keep trying easing oil,   mick.

I needed a breaker bar, and to attach the frame to a column in my basement. Even though, I needed to do a lot of brute force, never imagined it would be that hard.

Mental note to Raul.- Next time, loosen the swingarm nut before starting to dismantle the bike.

Applied heat and I got it to move a little still will not come out.  More soaking and hopefully I will get it out. I have come across many stuck bolts but this one wins the prize.

There should be a lug on left side of frame to prevent swing arm spindle turning. Its seized on the inner tube so it gets really difficult to remove. try removing the grease nipples first and cleaning them out. then put 'hose' end of PB Blaster can into swing arm and soak the inside. If that doesnt work you have to lay bike on left side and beat the pivot until the frame flexes slightly. then you use a hacksaw blade with end taped up as a pull saw in the narrow slot.(remove it from hacksaw frame) When you have one side cut you can move swing arm to other side and repeat cutting process (Tape the 'arrow' end of hacksaw blade where it shows cutting direction and pull it towards you, good idea to fit a short bolt, nail or whatever in the normal mounting hole as well)
Done way too many bikes like this, not just Yamaha's (in fact, mostly Honda and Suzuki)
