Any eye doctors/opticians here?
« on: August 22, 2006, 09:29:22 AM »
I want a polarized film or lens to put on my speedo and tach- the glare sometimes drives me nuts.
Is there anything out there?  Here's your free idea- can I just have some since I gave you the idea?  You'll get rich!
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

sorry to hi-jack your post but I was thinking it might be an idea to have a thread where our jobs are disclosed, who knows we may be able to help each other in a non-SOHC4 way also.

I've never had any problem reading a tach/speedo because of glare but if I did, I would wear sunglasses with polarizing lenses. Seems like the less is more approach works in this instance.

I think RSV12K's point is on the mark. I don't think the glare being seen off the instrument can be altered at the instrument. The polarization occurs as the light passes through a lens, such as glasses.

You can buy polarizing film to put over your laptop screen,
Used to prevent others (on the air plane) from watching what you have on your screen. :o
It might be expensive though.

You can buy a dulling spray, if you feel glare is getting in the way.

In my previous life (pre motorcycle instructor and driver examiner) I was a dispensing optician, for 32+ years.

The problem with sticking polarising film over the clock faces is that 1) you have to orientate it correctly so that the polarisation axis is in alignment with the glare you are trying to eliminate and b) you may find it harder to read the clocks under low illumination.

The idea about wearing a pair of polarised sunglasses is a good one, because then you control when you have the reflected glare reduction in place, and of course you won't be wearing them under low illumination. I swear by (not at!) polarised sun lenses.

The only down-side of the whole polarisation thing is that it the filters show the stress 'contours' in heat tempered glass, such as the rear windshields of cars, and it can interefere with the clarity of digital instrumetation.

I'll try to help with any other optical related questions out there....

I have prescription polarised sunglasses... I still get a shot a bright light the irritates me when the sun hits my instruments just right. Go figure.  That coomputer screen stuff sounds interesting.  What's a "dulling spray"- like hairspray?  Someone else suggested Scotch brand disappearing tape.  I'm retiring to the lab~

It's Mr, not Dr; but thank you anyway.

The solution to your problem is to spend more time around your motorcycle and less time around women. Then your eyes can wander as much as they like; the motorcycle will never complain and actually likes the idea of you thinking lecherous thoughts and getting your leg over on a regular basis. Failing that I recommend the use of the apparatus prescribed by my assistant cbjunkie, or that you wear a pair of heavily tinted sunglasses, so that your wandering eye problem is not an embarassment to either you or the lady in question.

Cold showers before going out into public may also help.

I hada pair of cheap sunglasses that gave me a rainbow effect on glass surfaces and I could see really odd things on car windows. Like the glass was messed up.

Hey Eldar...are you sure it wasn't the effects of the twenty beers you drank before you put them on....?

After I've had enough, sometimes I forget I'm staring out the end of the bottle while waiting for the last drop that never makes it past the lip of the bottle. Perhaps Eldar has the same problem...

You can get polarising filters for photo/video/cinematography that come in smallish sheets and can be cut to size for various camera lenses. I dont know how much this would eliminate your problem though. You could run into another problem. A polarising filter eliminates light in one direction, vertical or horizontal, If your filer was placed horizontal, and your sunglasses happened to eliminate vertical light, your gauges would appear as black circles and you could not see them at all! much worse than glare   ;D

Try wearing one pair of polarized sunglases and then look through another pair of the same glasses 90º  sideways.

Actually, these shades allowed me to see jsut fine no matter how I looked through them. It was just an effect they had.

You guys are soaks! Only soaks would drink piss from a can! I also never drink before i RIDE! and I never wait for the last drop, I get a new bottle!!! ;D

My bike suffered a drunk rider before I got it. At least it had an engine guard on it and vetter. They took the brunt of the hit. Rear signal light got it too.

My wife says to try spraying the gauges with hair spray....it will reduce the glare. Downside....washes off in the rain or the next you wash your scoot.

Uncle Ernie - I'm wondering if the glare is an occasional stab to the eyes or a regular occurrence.  Are your gauge lens highly convex?  Do you ride the same road at the same time each day?

Remember that some hairsprays contain caustic and flammable chemicals....test to make sure it won't affect the instrument cases.
