CB550K seat replacement options ?
« on: August 22, 2006, 10:04:01 AM »
The seat on my 78 CB550 is split in many spots.  Other than that the bike is in great shape.  I am unsure as to recover the seat or order one from Ron Ayers or similar company.  They re listed at around 150$.  Seat covers seem to be around 60$.  Are the factory seats as good as original?  same question for the covers?  thanks  Tim

I may be mistaken but i belive you will find that websites with microfiche, although helpful to see how things go together, are unable to order %90 of the parts that they have listed with prices.  They will send you a polite email saying they are sorry but the part you requested is no longer available from honda.
A good condition seat off of ebay is likly your best bet.  THe nice ones sell for $100 to $140.  I have no experience with the covers but i like that it isn't 30 year old material and they cover the chrome strip.

cover it yourself.  you can buy the color, and style you want and the seat clips from any trim shop around toyr area.  It will be a good bit less $$$$$ and you will learn something.  Its not hard.  Enough material to covrer the pad with some extra hanging over, stary in the front or rear and beging putting the clips on,  once all the clips are on and trhe cover looks as you want it to you just trim the excess off.  tada custom/factory looking seat that all your friends that ride will be asking where you got it from.

i redid mine over the weekend, only because a friend had a cover that would fit it.  i didn't buy it, but i think he said it was around $40.

if the foam's ok, the cover's dead simple to do, took about half an hour and looks 100% better.  there's basically little triangle hooks cut out of the seat pan that you can jab through the material then bend them back down.  didn't bother with the brads as this is only temporary till the race seat is uppolstered.
i love babies...
with a nice chianti sauce and a side of fava beans
