more noise than i am comfortable with
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:02:51 AM »
my 72 cb500 and I have logged over 3000 miles over the last season and a half of riding. I change the oil (Rotella synthetic)  about every 1000 miles. I have had, as I've read, many cb owners do, a clunkiing in my gearbox or lower end at low speeds. riding to work this morning I noticed that the clunking did not go away as it has in the past. what would or could be making that type of noise, and, should I be riding or tearing this engine down?

Is it only in certain gears or at certain rpm? Does the engine vibrate more than it used to?
Just as a check cause you never know, make sure your center stand pulls up tightly. If it is loose, it may clunk.

riding this afternon, it was loudest in the first three gears, accompained by a jerking forward as I accelerated. at 60 mph, I still felt it, although not as strongly. cneter stand spring is working fine; thats not the source of the clunking.

Doubt a chain prob but maybe. Might want to drop the oil pan and check things out. See if there are any metal shavings.

This might sound crazy but.... are you having any problems top part of the engine/carbs?  It could be there and causing some lash in the gearbox.

Just a little think.

Well the reason I dont think it is those is that it is only lower gears. But loads are different through the gears. You never know sometimes. Still think pan should be dropped though.
