cb550k oil leak, still
« on: August 24, 2006, 04:20:16 AM »
so i replaced the oil seal that goes around the shaft with the sprockte and the one around shifter shaft, but its still leaking oil when i ride it. i even let it sit, turned on, for a few mins and it didnt leak. then i went riding and got less than a quarter mile. pulled the oil housing off and cleaned up and saw oil coming from around the shifter seal. my dad said that we needed to put a simple hose gasket in first then the seal, sound logical? if not what the crap is wrong wtih my bike?!?!?!?

Check that its not comming from the oil pump cover and dripping down, unfortunatley Honda dont supply the pump cover "O" ring but I have sourced some if you need one. If you do email me direct
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

from what i have read about this procedure around here- and i hve read a lot- there seems to be a gret deal of prying the old hardened seal out, possibly damaging something like DD suggested, but maybe your dad's idea will help fill any voids your screwdriver may have made?

I'm sorry i can't be very helpful, but I am about to replace my shift shaft seal (when the mf arrives) and wanted to ask you to post your solution when, and it is when not if around here, you get to the bottom of whats happening, as the urge to just ride away on your nicely sealed moto may override your desire to type in how yu did it.  and i am posting so that when you do find it, the solution will pop into my unread replies, hopefully around the time the freaking seal decides to get here.
so 'scuse the less than helpful post
