76 750 starter motor
« on: August 07, 2006, 04:49:47 PM »
I'm trying to swap out a starter motor and the haynes manual says that it should just lift out of it's home without having to remove anything else.  Of course the picture in the book shows a fairly stripped engine.  There really isn't much in the way except for a camshaft chain tension holder.

(1) Am I retarded in not being able to lift / tip the starter out?  Or is there some other method?

(2) If I have to take the camshaft chain tension holder off, will that lead to something else?  (Like fouling up the cam shaft chain and / or the tensioner?)

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There is a good bit of wigglin and fanigglin to get the starter out.

I use a screwdriver and gently pry it back while twisting, be patient it will come out eventually.

and the funny thing is when you put it back in it will usually fall in to place :(

Me too! Don't seem to have any problems with the tensioner after re-installation...

From the opposte side of the bike use a puece of wood and gently hit it with a hammer.
That ia better that using a screwdeiver.
The starter is hard to loose because it fits tight to prevent oil leaks,

good luck.
