Would You?
« on: September 09, 2006, 09:10:21 AM »
I have a friend that has a first year Gl1000 sitting in his shed. It has all the original bits and pieces, but it has been sitting for a long time. It would need to be completely stripped down and rebuilt. Now my question is would you do it? Would you take on a project like this. I just have a hard time seeing any kind of older car or bike sitting and dying a slow death. It is almost like I can hear them screaming for someone like me to come along and restore them to their former glory. So would you do it?

I'd do it! ;D

It's a lot of work along the way, but the first ride on a fully restored bike makes you realize it was woth it.

It's complete, if neglected. Not a better way to start a project.
No.

If it is complete and original, go for it. Spares shouldn't be a problem, from all of the usual sources (eBay, Honda dealer, David Silver etc)....and the early ones are going up in value all the time.

I see that the popular vote is to do it. I am supposed to get together with this friend next weekend. i will see if we can come together on a price for the bike. I think he is worried that if he lets it go that it will just get parted out. I will have to promise him that that will not happen. I plan on telling him that I want to bring it back to life and ride it, like it was supposed to be riden.
Should I put all the original hard bags and fairing on it or should I make it a naked GL? I like the thought of a naked one.

The first years GLs were naked from the factory. Buy it, and start polishing things as you remove them. Fix what's broke and bring back
the rest. Like it's been mentioned, there's nothin like riding a cool looking restored bike. When those things are tuned right, you can't hear
them run after about 40 mph. Being totally complete is a definate plus too. You are very lucky indeed ;D

Kghost,
Those pics of your goldwing were the final straw as they say. That bike is almost identical to the pic in my mind. I will let you all know if my quest to acquire this forgoten goldwing is a success. I am pretty sure that my friend will sell it to me if I promise to bring it back and not part it out. I know he would like to see it running again.

Be nobel and save her from her slow death, I know I would.....

I have a 86 Honda 110 ATC that I am resurecting from just such a fate. Now that I have the motor rebuilt it is time to make it pretty. Will be on eBay in about a week incase anyone is interested.

I would restore it. I had a GL1000 two years ago. Nice ride and parts
were easy to find.
