and now for something completely different....
« on: August 24, 2006, 09:48:12 AM »
....well not all that different. I'm looking a 1974 BMW r75/6. Its a great looking bike, I've always loved the look of the old beemers. The issue is the thing has 107,000 k's on the clock. Current owner says its been rebuilt but doesn't know when or what was done. I'm a crazy for even considering buying a bike with that much mileage on it? Anybody ever own one of these?

Cheers,
Martini

My r75/5 had 60 or80k on it before needing the case to be cracked, even then, it didnt even really need it, it was just a bit tired.

Not sure on the year, but a guy here at work has an R75 with a sidehack. He loves it.

what's he asking?

they're built for the long haul.
and quite nice looking in their quirky weird nerdy big ass sideways cylinder way.

He's asking $3500 cdn., probably get it for $3000. Seems like alot for a bike with that mileage.

you'd have to really want it at that price.
or it'd have to be pretty mint looking.

The /5 is quite a bit more desirable. I would not pay more than 1700 US for a slash 6 (unless it was an r90s, but thats a whole different story).

I don't have the /5 anymore, I wrecked it (and myself) pretty good.

No.

Ah, yet more joys of the reality of bike pricing here north of the border! It does seem a bit high but if the motor has been done and everything is pristine then the only decision is how much you want it...

That's a really artistic HL shot up there.

A lot of that bike is cosmetics.  If the parts don't shine, the engine could be made of billet titanium and it wouldn't be worth it.  Cosmetic condition is VERY important in the Beemer community.  The R75 is a terrific bike. They handle pretty well, have one of the best seats in the business, with the Euro bars the ergos are a true pleasure.  For price comparisons, check IBMWR, Airheads BMW, Ebay, etc.  For a ton of great info in general, Duane Ausherman's website tells it like it is.  One of the funniest stories I've ever read is on that site, too.
Anyway, that bike in good condition is soon going to start going up in value.  The /5s are getting there already.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!
