Rattle mystery solved before doing something stupid
« on: October 07, 2013, 04:27:02 PM »
Rattle seemed to come from behind clutch when idling. Heard the noise in the dual exhaust too.  Loose baffle?  Clutch?

Months ago JB Welded the holes in mufflers and collectors to stop leaking exhaust and water.

Now humid.  Driving only a mile to work and back. Barely warms up.  Speed of 20 mph.

Ready to tear things off.

Desperate luck prompted question of where the water had gone.

Rev'd motor to see and about half a cup flew out of each muffler.  Rattle gone.

Who'd think water in mufflers rattle instead of gurgle?  Now just rev it a couple of times before killing motor.

What you did with the JB Weld was seal the weep holes that are meant to allow water to drain. I would drill them open if I was you.

Thanks for recommending this.   I will add some.  Mufflers and collectors were fabricated by PO.  Maybe the mufflers are auto glass packs?  Cracks in collectors patched but no weep holes.  Drill holes at a low point in collectors and another in mufflers?  Nothing big.  If it doesn't work, there is always more JB Weld!

I had a bad rattle on my CB990F that was worrisome going down the road. It happened at around 2500-4000 rpm and thought the top end was coming apart. Was relieved when I finally took the helmet off and really started digging in and listening as was extremely relieved when I found it  was just the mirror glass had come loose and was vibrating in the housing at that rpm range. Disaster averted.

Actually I had a mirror that buzzed at a certain RPM. It was right in the sweet spot and I used it as a shift indicator.  ;D ;D ;D

OK I'm making a list of what to leave alone
1. Use mirrors for shift point BobbyR
2 Leave old blinker relay in to tell when batt. is low TT

There was actually a technical paper written for the SAE where a motorcyclist took photos of different patterns of a light in a mirror at different RPMs and speeds and these corresponded to engine defects like bad valve guides etc.,.
This was in a Cycle World magazine a zillion years ago.

3. There are certain RPMs that will tickle scrotum if you sit on the seat in a certain position. People will wonder why you are smiling. If they ask, just tell them your bike makes u happy.

Could you be a little bit more specific? Like how narrow is that RPM band? How narrow or tight are your pants? Any pics? Is it gender dependent? Is the G-spot playing a role? And last but not least: does your bike know you're taking advantage?
Isn't this a wonderful forum!
