How do I set the valve timing?
« on: August 24, 2006, 11:34:18 PM »
I have been refreshing my 1978 750FII Super Sport. I supposed to finish up installing new head gasket by June... Now I realized I have no clue how to set up the valve timing. Would some one kindly advise how to set up the valve timing? The engine is all normal.

Thanks in advance,

Yas

If you haven't got a manual you can download one here for free

link

http://www.honda4fun.com/spaccati/spaccati.html

and if you look in the FAQ section , there will be some hints in there as well

have a good read, and come back for stuff you can't work out  :)

Have a browse around on that site, it is there somewhere - I think I have a copy on my computer- not sure where I put it though..

 :)
Setting the valve timing is really the same on all SOHC models - just there may be some differences in the clearances between models..

Hi Yas,

"Position the 1 and 4 pistons at TDC by aloigning the No. 1 and 4 'T' mark on the spark advancer with the index mark on the crankcase"
"Rotate the camshaft so the timing index line on the right end is parallel with the top surface of the camshaft holder"
This is from the Honda manual.  The square notch on the right end of the camshaft faces up.  Here is a bad scan of a bad scan.

Wait a minute...  What the hell is going on here?

I've always checked valve clearance by sliding the feeler gague between the cam lobe and the rocker arm.  Here it's being checked between the tappet screw and the valve itself.

Is it different for CB550s/CB650s than CB750s?

Is there some confusion here between valve timing and valve clearance? ??? ???
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

No confusion here :)
But timing is the cam itself - the chain on the sprocket, or maybe you have the slotted sprocket and need a degree wheel and cam specs to set it...
The notch or line or flat on the cam should be up or down with the crank at 1-4 TDC. Either way, but it has to be one or the other. One turn of the crank, back to 1-4 TDC, will flip the mark over.
Clearance is the tappet adjustment... or changing shims on most DOHC bike engines.

Thanks guys, but I got new problem today. As I almost finished up removing old head gasket and fill with excitement to put new head gasket. I was dreaming taking my F to work in couple days... I realized that the cam chain tensioner upper wheel (pulley) has funny shape. It has been grinded in half. Where do you guys purchase this kind of thing? Honda dealer or do you all have some information for good web site? I am in North Carolina, US. BTW, my original question on this posting was how I can set the cam timing after rebuilt the motor... maybe my way of questioning was bad. Thank you for all info. you guys gave anyway!!
