Master Link Question
« on: October 09, 2013, 02:45:39 PM »
Is a rivit type master link as strong as the rest of the links in the chain? I assume it is stronger than a clip-on type link.

It depends on the riveting.  Well placed clip is better than crappy riveting job.

Hi gang.It distresses me just a little that DID no longer offers a clip type master link for their o- ring chain that I use.The master link side plate on the clip link they used to offer was a press fit and I see no reason why it would not have been as strong as any other link in the chain.   Rock On

What does "well placed" mean?

Correct orientation, clean groves and slid all the way in.

I have a brand new chain for my bike but it is 2-3 links too short since I changed swing arms. Some said run 2 masters but I wouldn't run 2 clip-on links. Some said they make a link and a half kit but they come with 2 clip-on links.
I'm thinking of just adding a single link with 2 rivit master links. The chain essentially would be a continuous link chain that if done properly you wouldn't be able to tell which were the masters. Bad idea? If yes, explain why.

Maybe somebody here would buy your new chain to help fund the $$ for one that fits your bike proper. Is this going on a ratty old stock bike or a Hypo where you have invested lots of time and money. The old saying "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link" can ring true sometimes.

it's going on the XR race bike. I understand a chain is only as good as it's weakest link. I'm waiting for someone to convince me that a properly installed rivit link is any weaker than a regular link. I don't see the difference, every link on the chain is a rivit link.

Riveting
I worked as an AIRCRAFT MECH for 43 years and LOTS of rivet experience.
The problem with riveting a link on a chain is not to set it too tight, when chains are assembled the rivet machine is set to stop after so many beats and also the driver(we call it the set) has a shoulder to stop it from setting the rivet too tight, if you pinch the links with the side plate, it wears out real quick.
The riveted link would actually be stronger but the problem is a proper install!!!
