Pilot Jets?? - size 40
« on: August 28, 2006, 12:45:29 AM »
Anyone got an answer to this

Do the standard pilot jets for a 750 being size 40 have a hole that goes straight through the lenght of the jet??

The reason I ask is that I have cleaned these things a few times and the holes in the jet are clear from side to side on the main shaft, but trying to see through them from end to end seems to not happen.

I can use a fine wire to poke down from each end but never seem to go the HOLE way through  :) :)

thanks for your replies

Yep there should be a hole straight through. They can be a bear to clean. Soak in carb cleaner for several days. I used a single bristle from a steel brush to clear mine. Don't get too agressive, the hole is tiny and precise, if you ream it out it will run rich.

Another method to try is heating them to near glowing with a propane torch. This seems to turn the blockage into dust and then can be more easily cleaned.

Blow through them and make sure they are dry. Hold them up to a bright light source. Any wet carb cleaner or gas in the jet will make it appear blocked. If you can get a wire through it I would think you would be able to see some light through the opening.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Yes.  There should be a hole right through the center.

I've had great results soaking jets in Yamaha combustion chamber cleaner.  Any Yamaha dealer should have it and IMO it works great.

I second the Yamaha carb cleaner - it's purported t/b especially good at dissolving varnish while still easy going on seals. I stripped my 'gang of 4' just yesterday and soaked overnight in Yamie' solution. A blast of compressed air cleared a couple of my still clogged 40s.

Reassembled the whole affair this morning and am quite pleased how clean everything looks inside and out!

I borrowed a very small braid of stainless steel wire - unravelled a length and poked and prodded and twisted it through the pilot jets, then because the wire was "wavy" in appearance, I ran this back and forward while gently rolling the jet around the wire about 20-30 times.

They are now clearer than before...so will give them a try after I put on some new clamps for the carb boots. :)
