This was a overnight soak. Fiber washers will be replaced. Evapo Rust works well. No harsh smell. Dump down the drain.





Funny, you pay $7.50 for a complete OEM fuel cap..



And $8.00 for a battery strap bolt..



And $3.50 for the mounting collar.  ;D I think I bought the last two (2) of these according to my supplier.



Stock or not is my motto.  ;)

TT, teach me something here please. I'd have probably taken a wire wheel to those rusty petcock screws and have a nice day. Why soak them to derust them? Was it simply because you had the stuff handy?

I have found in the past that some replacement gas caps from Honda were not "quite" the same as original.  They seemed to have a different/higher shape to them, if I recall correctly.  I'll have to check what I have on some of my bikes and take a picture to confirm.

Also, regarding the petcock to tank seal: I believe it is just a normal o-ring (gas resistant) that is the correct size in circumference and cross-section.  You should be able to source one from normal sources.  After it sits for years between the tank and petcock, it retains the oval shape.

Does the O-ring start out round, but gets squared off from being compressed against the tank?

I think the Evaporusk cleaned screws will re-rust at a slower rate than if you wire brush. But I could be wrong.

After the soak wash in dish soap. No worries.

I have my cargo trailer for sale so I had to move the other CB160 and the 1973 CB350G into the Shop. While doing many other things I just kept looking at this bike. I mean really? Original fuel clips are still on it? 3670 miles?

Just amazing how nice this really is. I can't find a dent anywhere on this bike. Thinking all this needs is the fuel tank and carburetors cleaned, oil change, tune up, lube the chain and it will get me down the road.  8)

Just love looking at it and eyeing it up as we all do.

This will be continued.  ;)

As mentioned earlier, I had the chance to look at the two versions of gas caps that I have on some of my bikes from the 1960s.  The same cap seems to have been used on various models - these examples came from a 1962 CB77 and a C95 from about 1965.  The replacement cap is slightly different and came from a Honda source that was listed as original.  You can see it definitely has a different design of vent bottom and not so obvious has a taller chrome top with a pronounced contour ridge.  The grip ridges are also different and the diameter of the replacement cap is slightly larger.

They both do the job and a newer replacement most likely will look better with shiny chrome and no dints as might be on an original.  I don't know what the ones you received are like, or even if they are similar to the replacement ones I have, but here are my pictures.

Does anyone know which "silver" was used to paint the lower fork legs?

Did some more investigation.  The original cap for the CB77 is listed as 17620-259-000, which probably is what my picture showed.  The current replacement part is 17620-402-010 which matches the one I showed as well as what David Silver parts list displays.  The original for the CB160 is listed as being a different cap - 17620-253-010, which is what your part seems to be.

I no longer have a CB160 so I can't see what it had on it.  I don't know if it was original or not, but I thought the cap was the same as my other models...maybe it was different.

That's part of the restoration puzzle I suppose:  finding the right part when perhaps Honda substituted another which may also be correct.
