Company that you can send your carburetor to have it rebuilt ?
« on: October 19, 2013, 05:34:49 PM »
Hi guys, last week I saw a bike on bikeexif or silidrome that was restored by a company that allows you to ship in your carbs and they rebuild them with an upgrade kit for $290. I forgot where I saved the bookmark and can;t find it anymore. Anyone know a company that does that ?

There are a few members here that do carb work/rebuilds. Hit the search up in the right side of your screen for "carb rebuilding".

Again one of those posts where you do not tell the year of the bike, the size or model. You do not tell what the problem is you may be dealing with. One of the things about restoring or owning old machines is being able to deal with the basics, and carbs are one of those and its an issue with most. Lots of times they do not need a "rebuild" but just a good cleaning. Not a lot of parts that wear out per say on these. Aftermarket stuff can be worse than dealing with what you have for starters. There are a ton of threads on here and elsewhere to help the unconfident.
That said follow the others suggestion and look here for experienced members to do it for you if that is a better option.
What is this 'upgrade kit' that you saw ?

Thanks guys, my bike is a 1972 cb500F, I got a rebuild kit and replaced the parts but have a leak and felt like i would rather pay to have it fixed as i spent a lot of time already on it. My bowl gaskets were not shaped right and were a pain to align. I'm going to try a new et i ordered from ebay but if that doesnt work I want to just send it out to someone.

what about setting the gaskets up in some warm water, like real warm to try to get some malleability to them. Another kit may solve it but I really try to avoid spending the money.

Reuse your brass parts after cleaning well. Try to be gentle because the brass is super soft, hard steel will deform the stuff a little. Metered passages shouldn't randomly be reamed out

Any leaks would be wrong float height, float bowl gasket hanging up the float, needle/seat not sealing or little bits of crud holding the needle off of it's seat. There is an outside chance that the overflow tube is cracked but it is far and few between. Also are your gas lines leaking at the T and looking like it is the carbs?

Stuff like that you can verify before having to ship them out. Frustrating and annoying, yes. But you have already nutted up and torn in to them anyway, why give up when so close?

Harisluv has got skills tho if you still want to go that option

I need to double check if it's not leaking at the T but I already ordered the gaskets as I wasn't sure I placed them right. Tried hard grease to hold them in place but I'm sure out of 4 at least 1-2 are on wrong.

Thanks for all the good advice :-). I need to build some temporary tanks to try test them out again. I'll be working on it next weekend, should receive the bowl floats by than.
I already replaced all internal parts except the floats so hopefully fixing the leak will get them working fine ( after some calibration of course)

Soak the bowl oring in fuel and allow them to expand, should be easier to put back

I don't think there are any "companies" other than one man companies.
Harrislove comes to mind first.

This is a rampant problem with the "kits" out there for the 500 carbs, both the #22A and the #627A types. The O-rings they are sending out are 1-2mm too small in diameter. They also send float valves that are so long that it is difficult to make a smooth action with the float tang closure unless you mod the shape of the tang a little bit. Also, the new air screws in most of the kits I have seen the last 2 years (maybe longer) are not the right ones for the carbs. They don't have the right air holes in them, and the set I have here tonight actually has the holes soldered shut. ?

So, it takes a little extra work to make things fit up right. ;)

ha!depending on what you need i actually solder the holes on airscrews closed, the ones with the holes you can only enrichen so much, you might need it richer but cant and cant figure it out why?the solid screws give you more final control, depending on what you need.

early models had soild screws, most kits have the ones that have holes, you can only enrichen so far then, when you feel its lean you start on the mains etc, when all it really needed was a richer off idle maybe?the idle circuit on these carbs contributes to the entire fuel feed, unlike most cars type carbs where it sort of shuts down the idle circuit once your under way!

The only problem with this "upgrade kit" is how do you know that it is what you need. I'm not gonna pay somebody a markup on parts I can source myself from sudco, jetsrus siriusconinc, ebay unless you dyno'd the bike and say here, this upgrade kit is the best for YOUR bike
