We're only human! Every step in the process is based on how accurate we are. Finding true TDC, setting the lash, angle of the dial indicator, size of the degree wheel and then reading them. If you tore it apart and re-timed it today your opening/closing numbers might not be exactly the same. (at least in my case  ;)) If we used a 3ft. wheel it would help.  Megacycle offers fairly accurate cam card numbers, but I always end up with 105 degrees too. Did you check valve/piston clearance while your set-up was in place?

The point is, if the LC's are the same, you've done a good job.

After all Thanksgiving company left yesterday,  I took some quiet time with no distractions to accurately measure CLs taken off I and E retainers on #1 from a very precise TDC.  Measured twice, cut once.Very happy.  104.75/105.  Cigar time.  But I do have a Q for Mr. MRieck.  Will PM.

A little off the current state of the build, but these photos are for Kranta in Finland who is trying to reassemble his transmission shafts in his 550 cases.  I was having issues trying to attach pics in my PM.  The 2nd pic is compliments (plagiarized) of FunJimmy from his Gentleman's Roadster.

I am all set for the crew to come and lift and slide the engine into the frame - the old fashion way.  Since I should have enough man power to gently install the engine, I decided to pre-install the CR 26s.  A few IPAs go a long way.

These are the 'before' pics.  Wish me luck.

Think I'd pull the carbs & the pan. Too much good looking paint to scratch!

That looks amazing. It's a good thing that you have a lot of help to get that engine in.

Crap...with the rain today in S.D. the road going up to my place in the mountains was shut down due to a roll over fatality accident.  It's been raining fairly hard and steady.  My guys are now rescheduled for Tuesday to install the engine.  In the meantime, off comes the seat and tank.  I applied a first layer of low stick tape, then duct tape.  Over the lower frame bars I will tape some flexible vinyl sheets (like notebook cover material) instead of bubble wrap.  As per suggestions, I will remove the oil pan, carbs and breather cover from the engine before the install.  For this build it's been "hurry up and wait."

I also took advantage of the lag time to clean, inspect and rebuild the oil pump with new rubber gaskets and o-rings...so it wasn't a total waste of a day off.  It was in very good condition.

Jeff, that's just leftover from where I bolted on the degree wheel to the alternator side.  In earlier posts I showed a Dyna 2000 I mounted under the seat - just forward of the m-unit.

Cheers.

Blackfin for what it's worth, first make sure the paint is off all the frame mounting points and engine to ensure a good earth.
I've just finished installing my engine and I used bubble wrap rather than getting the frame covered in adhesive. I then sat the donk (Aussie slang for "engine") on its side on a rubber cushion with a blanket underneath the whole lot and a mate helped me lower the frame very slowly and carefully over the engine and as per SohRon's install proceeded putting in the bolts to hold the engine. Not a scratch or chip on the frame. Then carefully cut the bubble wrap off the frame.

I also gently used a long screwdriver to lever the engine up when installing the long bolts that hold the foot pegs and the rear hanger.

It's handy to leave the wheels on as they act as a leverage point when standing the bike upright.

I concur with removing the tank, pan, carbs. Put some plastic tubing on the exhaust studs...the threads can cut through the tape in a second. I wrap pieces of linoleum around the frame rails. It is thin but very tough.

Thanks for all the comments....thanks to you guys for support and knowledge.

While waiting for tomorrow for engine install, I rebuilt oil pump and removed PC from mounts on engine and frame, removed oil pan, carbs and breather cover.

Cheers!

Some pics from earlier in the week.  The motor went in easy peezy.  I used pink notebook vinyl covers I cut to fit and then tape around the frame.  The frame was unscathed.  With 4 guys, it was simply held in place while the bolts were slipped in.  Less than 5 minutes.

Thank  you.  Major threshold reached with engine in.  Just ordered side cover gaskets.  Getting PC off starter bolt mounts for good ground.

Cal....have daughter who loves pink.  She hasn't noticed her 2 notebooks missing yet.  They worked great.  But according to research, blue is most durable.

Cheers!

This is a side Xmas story.  The 550 guys went on the Toys for Tots ride to Tijuana from San Diego.  It was co-sponsored by the Solo Angeles "social m.c. club" in TJ and San Diego Harley-Davidson.  Police escort the way down.  Thousands of bikes.  The SOHC4s were a hit.  Lots of photo op requests to sit on the bikes.  The Blue Blaster (my 750F) got a lot of attention.  If felt like Santa handing out toys to poor kids.

The first pic is of 2 of the 550 guys on the left and the head honcho of the Solo Angeles on the right.
