FunJimmy, I know you also had this issue.  I hope you read this.  What was your solution?  I really do not want to shave down the rubber tank mounts and there is no 16mm x 1.5 (77 & 78 550s) pingel or adapter collar this size for a pingel.  Maybe I should try to twist it sideways to clear

Oops. Been falling behind on my subscribed project threads.
Ya, I had the same issue with my CR26 carbs and the petcock.
Due to the custom intake manifold, my clearance issues appear more extreme than yours.

I couldn’t find a petcock that would clear the carbs so I machined a straight stainless steel fuel spigot and use a Motion Pro inline fuel tap.
I still have the factory filter screen, but no fuel reserve with this setup so getting a sense of fuel consumption is key.

Another issue is where and how to mount the remote idle adjuster cable now used on the CR26 carbs.  I think the left side would be best but I have'nt found an optimal mounting location yet.  It is designed to simple clip on to something and kinda just hang there.  Anyone care to chime in, please do.

Got this cleaver idle mount idea from brandEn. Clean, simple and easy to reach.

Exhaust will go on this afternoon.  Have the gaskets ready to go.  Used Red Line assembly lube.  Primed oil pump.  M-unit turns over starter motor.  Getting good spark.  Break-in oil in sump.  Gallon of fuel in tank.

Should I give a little squirt of WD40 or light oil into cylinders first?  I will roll bike in neutral then first gear with plugs out.

Any other first start tips?

Got the Mac 4-1 headers and muffler on.

This is typically something I do with an extra set of hands, but it went fairly smoothly.  Earlier, I had a friend check out the Kerkers and he thinks he can heat bend to fit if using the spin-on oil filter.  I let him take the headers and the spin-on.  Nothing to lose.

I re-checked the valves - a bit nervous about bending a valve stem.  Clearances were OK.  .004 for intake and .005 for exhaust.

There is a fuel leal at the petcock outlet which I mitigated, but not eliminated, by tightening the hose clamp.  Slowed down enough to attempt to start the engine.

Battery voltage was only 12.05v.  Brand new battery (sitting on a shelf though since about September) but probably it ran down when I was dealing with the m-unit quirks.  Thanks again, Cal, for solving that issue.

So I swiped the m-lock sensor and hit the start button. The engine turned over nicely for about 3 - 4 seconds, but then the m-unit turned off.  Tried again by swiping the sensor to switch on; it turned over .... but the m-unit turned off again after about 2 seconds.  Third time, swipe the sensor, and barely turned over before the m-unit shut down.  I need to ask Cal, but the m-unit may be designed to shut down when attempting to start with insufficient cranking voltage.  I just don't know enough about its features.  I hope the Dyna 2000 is somehow not interfering with the m-unit.  I will say that during the three attempts to start, there was no sound of any combustion....propbably not enough fuel getting into the cylinders from the carbs, but I did hear gas trickle down into the float bowls.

Battery is on the charger now, and after only a minute or two, the voltage climbed to 12.47.

So, it was a no-go for today.

Yes, I know you did.  The GF got in the way.

I stopped by the shop for a few minutes on the way to the office.  The battery is holding a strong charge of 14.05 V.

AsCal suggested, I swiped the m-lock sensor and waited to see if it shut down.  It stayed on.

The m-unit must have some feature to preserve battery when it detect a low charge.  The engine turned over very well and sustained without the m-unit shuting down.  But the engine wouldn't start.  I will re-test for spark when I get home.

I did notice that the bottom of carb filter #1 was dripping gas.  I pulled the filter, dry it up and turned the petcock to "on."  Fuel was leaking badly either from the bowl gasket or from the housing for the "inter carb" fuel line used with mutiple carbs.  There may not be a block in there.  I didn't have any time to really investigate.  So I shut the petcock and wiped up the fuel.

On a side note (no pun intended), I rode the Orange Monster to breakfast the other day and when I came out, I noticed that someone had stolen the right side cover.  I'm sure it didn't fall off during the ride because that thing was in there tight.  So tight I was concerned I would break off the tabs.  There is no way I'll ever be able to match the custom orange and gold flake.

Yah, I don't get it.  Probably someone with a 550 who has a broken one.  I know everyone around here with 550s, but on the weekends the place gets a ton of tourists this time of year because of the snow.  Very bummed.  Will probably go gloss black now with fender and side covers.

I think I see my fuel leak problem thanks to FunJimmy.  I am using the carb inlet (the black 90) shown on the left side of carb body #1 as depicted in FJ's pic (FJ has no hose or no cap on it).  That's where I have the fuel line from the tank connected.  It looks like FJ is using one of the inlets on the fuels lines between the carb bodies.

It is incorrect to use this inlet and should it be capped?

Effin' Savages.  I remember riding my 750 to the IMS show about 6 years ago and someone stole one of my sidecovers in the parking lot.  It pissed me off that they did it at a motorcycle show of all places!

Lance: They should be f'ing killed. No trial, no jury, straight to execution.
Vincent: Boy, I wish I could've caught him doing it. I'd have given anything to catch that a-hole doing it. It'd been worth him doing it just so I could've caught him doing it.
Lance: What a f'er!
Vincent: What's more chicken$hit than f'ing with a man's automobile? I mean, don't f with another man's vehicle.
Lance: You don't do it.
Vincent: It's just against the rules.

I should have looked closer to your routing. The 90° inlet on the left side of the carb is a breather. Should be left open. If memory serves me, my fuel line goes to the connector between #2 & #3 carbs. I'll take a look tonight.

Cal, I should have know you were wanting to ride on my Dockers, er .... I mean coattails.  Lucky for you this is a very accepting bunch.   ::)

I have no clue as to what Toyon means.  It was the name of a small boating/yachting club on Catalina Island when I was a kid.  It's long gone but I have very nostagic memories.  "Blackfin" is a species of fast tuna in the Gulf and all my boats have been named Blackfin.  Blackfin set the Transpac record in, I believe, 1969 or thereabouts.  The name just stuck.
