I now get why one of the small starter relay (solenoid) wires is green/red.  I grounded it directly to the frame (via a small neg. bus bar) and the starter turns over when you hit the start button.  But I have bypassed the neutral switch.  I only want the bike to start when in neutral, so I guess it was correctly wired (?) and I need have the circuit closed.  What is throwing me off is that the OEM diagram shows the second small solenoid wire being black and connected to the black wire of the voltage regulator - not to the neutral switch wire.  But I thought a black wire in the Honda wiring diagram means switched power??

Hi, Cal.  I think I understand your explanation.  In essence, in OEM mode, the starter relay (solenoid) does need switched power (once key is turned on) and the circuit must be closed via the neutral switch for the starter motor to receive power.  As you know, electrical is far from my strong suit, but I am beginning to understand how everything should work with the m-unit.

Since I got the starter motor to turn over by disconnecting the green/red wire from the neutral switch wire, and then grounding it, I think I will leave it alone for now and use "aux" from the output side of the m-unit and the neutral switch wire to power up the neutral indicator light.  I am not so concerned about me starting the bike when in gear with the clutch out, more than I am about friends riding the 550s.  Also, during the TJ Toys for Tots ride, the 750 Blaster stalled out in a busy TJ intersection.  The 750 was hot and I had a hell of a time finding neutral to re-start the bike.  It was a scary moment with a bunch of crazy drivers zipping around me.  The clutch needs adjusting (only engages when the lever is almost all the way out) and I think that was the issue.  Without the neutral safety wire, I could have quickly restarted the bike by simply pulling in the clutch  regardless of what gear it was in.

So, because I'm so impatient to get this bike running, for now I will bypass the neutral wire to the solenoid and just frame ground it.

Thanks, Riceman.  I'm not sure what you mean about the screen.  Do you mean the filter tube that fits up into the bung of the tank?

I'm going to try one of these.  It's a 16mm so should fit and it appears to be a bit narrower because of the way it is tilted.  Will have a go at it when I get back to the shop.  I may have to shorten the bung a bit in an attempt to get the petcock to clear the carb body if there are enough bung threads remaining.  Having the outlet point down may help too.

Yeah,I meant the bung,so angled fittings wouldn't work with screen attached to petcock
plus it would probably look a little cheesy.
Snow in SD,that's different... :)
Mean while on the opposite end of the state we had wind chill of 8º this morning.

Kevin and John,

People outside of CA have no idea how rare it is to see the white stuff in SoCal -- at least outside of the mountains.  I was thinking of riding out to Palm Springs Monday, but did not cherish the though of riding home at night in the 30's.  No bueno!

Stay warm and safe.  Happy NYE!

Snow huh? No bueno indeed, must be global warming.

Wait a day or two boys, you'll be good to go again, not like us poor frozen souls. Now is our official shop time!

Happy New Year from the Great White North. ;D

Happy New Year, Brent.  At least you guys all have heaters in your shop.  We only have A/C.

New petcock clears the carbs by a c-hair.  Old vs new.

Also, the Tarrozi shifter linkage is not a direct inline shot, its skewed.  I need to replace with one for a 750F which has a dogleg in it.  Same length.

Another issue, albeit minor, prevents a start up by my goal of Jan. 1st.  The CR26s each has a fuel inlets - one between carb 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and 3 and 4.  They are capped off.  And a separate outlet on the outside.of carb no. 1.he other between 2 and 3.  The inlets have a larger OD (8mm)  than the petcock outlet (5.5mm).  I guess designed to provide fuel line routing option, more than 1 tank, more than 1 fuel feed.  Not sure the reason. Will try to get the bike started tomorrow with something jury-rigged for the 2 different hose sizes.

Sounds like you need a T piece with a small inlet side and CR sized outlets... ;)

....or use 2 different size hoses with a reducer coupler.  But not a clean look.

Any suggestion?

You need something like this, in the correct size of course.... ;)

Great idea.  Then both inlets to the carbs can be fed fuel too.

Thanks, Retro.

Can't find any unequal T or Y fittings around here less than 5/16 hose size.

Thanks, Retro.  I decided for now to use only 1 inlet and I found an unequal hose barb adapter.  6mm to 8mm between petcock outlet hose and carbs inlet hose.  Seems to work fine.  I appreciate your offer.

Happy New Year.

Cool pic of what looks like McLaughlin's R90. No #$%*, but in 76 I raced against a pre superbike championship R90s that Pridmore had raced in late 1975. I was twenty on my 810 CB750 and the thing plain kicked my ass. They were an oddball very fast racebike for a couple years.

Sorry for the sidetrack, funny what pictures can do to perk our memories.

No argument there. But stock, they were so plush riding with long travel forks and that engine torque reaction, it was just hard to believe they could be turned into such a fast racebike.
