20 years ago or so Fram motorcycle spin on oil filters were blowing the sealing o rings out. It was a big problem at racetracks and the Fram filters were banned. Turns out Fram changed the manufacturing to Indonesia.
 Suzuki TL1000's used to blow out a clutch push rod seal (if I remember correctly it was the push rod). I installed a few of them and used green Loctite on the seal OD. They never popped out again.

Thanks for the info, Mike.  I have one these spin-on filters in the 750 Blaster with no issues.
I have another but couldn't get it hand tight.  The filter body threads kept spinning free of the center bolt before I could get tension.  So that's 2 out of 3 that are bad.  I bought them from vintagecb750.com for $21.95 each.

Anyone know of an alternative spin-on?

I use genuine Honda spin-ons for the race engine. #15410-MJO-405, $8.95 ea.

What type of mount are you using to screw in the spin-off OR are you just screwing straight in replacing the entire stock housing?

I have the Cycle X spin-off mount on my 750 and it uses a Harley Spec filter PH6022 from Fram.

Rob (Voxonda) made the adaptor with ports for the oil cooler lines for me. Beautiful work with an aluminum double male that bolts the adaptor to the engine case, plus accepts the filter.

I couldn't find a pic but if you need let me know.

Are you going to try another/replacement spin on filter? I don't remember you installing an oil pressure gauge to see if the pressure was abnormally high.

Don, no I didn't.  I didn't know a 550 engine could readily accept an oil pressure gauge as could a 750.  I would love to install one if possible with the engine in the frame.  However, I would do so for security that the pressure is not too low.  I can't imagine pressure being too high with the stock oil pump, even if rebuilt.  But I wish you could have seen the force by which the oil shot out when the seal blew.  I should have taken a pic but was too busy scurrying to kill the engine and lay down rags.  It shot out about 2 feet from the bike.  I was in shorts and my ankles got blasted with fresh oil.

Don, I just contacted Rob to see if he had an adaptor mount on hand without oil line ports.  I will not use another of those chrome spin-ons.  I will probably convent the Blaster as well to the Honda spin-on Brent uses, but with oil cooler line ports - it runs hot.

I'm not entirely certain as to how to run a pressure gauge on the 550.  750s no problem.  Rob/Voxonda does great work but his production time is sometimes long, since he has a day job.  If he's up for it, I'll buy one, too (without cooler lines), to make production worth his time.

The 550 guys are going for a ride in the morning and I want to take Danielle.  It's a beautiful sunny weekend here in San Diego.  But I haven't received the oil filter adapter plate from Rob at Voxonda yet.  During the initial shake down I was using the OEM filter and housing with no issues.  But I am all out of the stock 550 oil filter elements.  The only option is another new, still in plastic wrap, spin-on filter from vintagecb750.  I have 2 left.  So, I say to myself, the one that blew out the other day must have been defective and if I insure the rubber seal is seated properly in the recess of the spin-on filter body, and tightened it a bit extra, then I should be good to go.   So this evening I ever so carefully installed the spin-on filter and added about 2-1/2 to 3 quarts of new Maxima oil.  Hmm, maybe I should fire her up just to make sure there are no leaks.  It was dark outside so I started her up in the shop where I could do a visual for any leaks.  The bike fired right up with full choke and as it was warming up nicely when ...... ka-blewy.



Missed my ankles this time.  Still lost all that fresh oil and a nasty clean up followed these pics.  In the below pic you can see the rubber seal bulging outward.  I have one left ---- target practice tomorrow.  You are duly warned about these spin-ons from vintagecb750.

I was just getting ready to post (still will) a question to the forum, are there any spin ons worth taking a chance with?  I've read here about lots of failures, now this. I've got an adapter for both, conventional cover or a spin on. Leaning towards conventional.   ???

I'm not really looking to buy another adapter. The Harley chrome spin ons I see don't list the CB750 as an additional fitment.

Hey Ron,

Just to clarify, it's a Cycle X adapter that incorporates a Harley filter (Fram Part PH6022).  http://www.cyclexchange.net/Oil%20System%20Comp%20Page.htm

No leaks, and you can change the filter without having to remove the pipes.

Thanks, that would probably work fine. I have an adapter but no filter. I suppose any filter that the Oring is the right diameter would work.

Silly me, I was looking for a spin on fitment for CB750 but of course it won't be on the list as OEM is not a spin on.

I'm going to take my adapter to the autoparts store and see what fits.  Brand name like WIX should be fine. They come in chrome.
