I had some rare idle time today so I was tinkering with suspension tuning.  To recap, I have Ikon 750F shocks in rear - 13.35" eye to eye.  OEM is 12.6".  In front, RaceTech .70kg single rate springs with emulators in new TNK 570mm tubes.  I think OEM length is 21-7/8 to 22-1/8 (depending on who you ask), or 555 - 562 mm.

I made several runs around the mountain curves and over known bumps.  Switched combinations of different length Ikons and messed with front fork pre-load and emulator springs.

Honestly, I thought I detected some difference with shorter shocks, but mostly in my head.

I went with the 13.35 Ikons and blue emulator springs with 3 turns, and reduced pre-load to 10mm.  To me, the bike handles awesomely.  So, my shocks are 20mm longer than stock; and my tubes are 15mm longer than stock.  Also, with a 120 rear tire and a 100 in front, the rear is raised about an additionsl 8mm compared to a stock set up.

I then tried to measure rake and trail.  I got approx 25° fork rake and maybe 3.9" trail.  My methods are rather crude but I think I am in the ballpark.  At rest centered with no rider, I have 28" vertical distance from top shock eye to ground; and 38.5" from top of fork tube to ground, measured at the side mid point.

I have been pondering K-Tech cartridges, but the bike handles so nicely and is so much fun I think I will just leave it alone.

Hello All.   No. 5 Danielle is officially back in the livery after a slow speed wash-out on my gravel driveway last summer.  Scraped up the left side of the tank, tweaked the clutch lever, and bent the left foot peg.  I decided to take this opportunity during COVID to "mod" her up even more.

Just a brief rundown of the upgrades with some pics.  Thanks to Devin at Cognito for the 35mm fixed triple tree.  With 14" shocks and a 100/90-18 front wheel, the rake is 22.5 degrees and the trail comes in at an exact 95mm with me on board.  To be safe, I installed a steering damper for a trail number under 100mm.

Devin also supplied the conversion hubs front and rear, to accommodate 2008 GSXR forks, with Gold Valve for the rebound and compression pistons.  I swamped out the existing Excel shouldered rims, which were WM3 and WM4, for Sun rims to fit 100/90 and 120/80 new Avon shoes.  I may later go with a 110 up front and a 130 in back, which will fit nicely on these Sun rims.  Laced with SS spokes and nipples from Buchannan.

Thanks also to Cliff Meyer for the custom built fender for the 110 x 18 front.

I slapped on Brembo calipers with new pads from a 2013 GSXR 1000, with a Duc Monster rear disc.  The Ohlin Street shocks also came from Devin, along with Cognito rearsets which replace the bent Tarozzi ones.

Went for my first ride this morning since crashing.  It ran a bit rough with a hanging idle, which was to be expected after the CRs have been sitting on the bike with fuel in floats since last summer.  I will get them sorted out shortly.  My only reservation is the bulbous Truck-Lite headlight.  On my mountain roads here I do not ride mush at night, and will likely go with a more trim headlight.  I can't say enough about the Brembo RCS 17 master cylinder.  I have the 19m version on the 750F, and it is awesome. . . silk stopping power.

The last thing to be completed were the tank badges, which survived the side wash out.

Cheers!!

Actually quite well.  Great turn in.  Holds the line.  Feels very nimble.  The rear shocks are 365mm, but still has a 95mm trail with the Cognito 35mm offset tree.  But I haven't pushed it hard yet.  If there issues, I think I can shorten the shocks or go back to the 13.35 in. IKons.  Then trail will be 101mm. But it looks more raked than it is.

It's not too scientific, but I just put the digital protractor on my orange 550 tank cover and got 0.1 degrees.  It has a stock stance..  The blue 550 with protractor in same position, it came in at 0.4 degrees.  The longer GSXR forks account for the almost stock stance.  I have to admit though, it does look pretty raked forward in the photos.

It's the shocks, I was just eye balling the same ones for my 750 with an extended swing arm. Did you consider the other set of ohlins on cognitos site without the gas chamber?

Yes, and I may switch these shocks over to my 750F build.  And get the reservoir-less ones for this 550.  I wouldn't mind lowering the rear a tad.  The chain doesn't rub on the swing arm, but it's close.

Hi All.  I took her out this morning for the first spirited shakedown since the rebuild.  I went up 78E, the mountain road from the west end of Santa Ysabel to Julian and back. Although it is Spring Break, no one was on the road at that time in the morning.  It was a clear 68 degrees.  Without sounding self-aggrandizing, I was generally super impressed with her performance.  Absolutely love the handling.  Point and go type steering characteristics and super grippy - better than I was expecting.  On some fast straights I was touching high 90s, but I was a little tentative over some uneven, rough patches of road and anticipated some head shake with front rake being only 22.5*.  I had the steering damper on the middle setting and could not feel it at all.  Nevertheless, I am not 100% comfortable with 22.5* even with a 35mm offset tree.  I may take off the 365mm shocks and get them shortened about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

The bike pulls very strong in the upper RPM ranges, but had some engine staggering mid-range at 3200 to about 4000.  Overall, she is much faster than my 750F. Then on decal, there was some popping coming down from about 5500 RPMs.  I am not sure why I'm getting hesitation and popping in mid-range because the engine was not touched during her time off and this had not happened previously.  I may try raising the needles a notch or two, and perhaps try slightly turning in the air screws a bit to enrich it.  Any comments on this greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Kevin
