Back to the rebuild, I have been away in the Tasmanian wilderness for approx 1 month plus back at work. I've done some little things in the background which have taken time. Everything I do it's got to be fully restored - time and money.

I'm missing so many pieces.

I now think I'll build the bike and then I'll see all the parts I need, when complete strip it down to do the chroming and bring it back to original.

This is looking very sharp! Good on you for keeping it stock. That frame looks great... I'm pretty sold on POR15 myself, so good to see it on your frame. Here's a tip: don't think about how much it's going to cost or you'll just drive yourself nuts.

I'm not sure how I missed this before, but will be following your progress!

Haven't posted for a while, but been doing lots of derusting, cleaning, rocker, head, barrels, cases all blasted and the put through a specialized motor (dish) washer. Came out fantastic.

Have rebuilt tachometer and speedo. Re built front caliper including polish and paint.

Now concentrating on the motor build.

Front and rear guards been at metal repair workshop then to chromers

Speedo and tachometer shells first removed rust then copper, then chromed, they came up well, domed nuts at chromers now.

Found out today from Honda dealer my motor CB509E 2414 is actually a 73 not 72 model, they told me Honda japan have plenty of bearing shells for crankshaft, except here in Oz cost is $250!

Just received the reconditioned cam back from "Tighe Engineering" in Queensland, lobes (stock grind - they had the specs) and bearing surfaces all restored. Bearings are taped to protect.

Engine back from washing (a huge engine washing machine - like a dish washer) and all oil channels cleaned, wire through each and compressed air -not a spec of sand from blaster. A mate of 25 years (the best mechanic in Sydney) did it freeby.

Now to start the engine rebuild!

Between 1969 and 1979 I had 7 motorbike licences, never got of "P" plates (in Australia it's a provisional licence, don't exceed 90ks and no pillion for 12 months).

Pleased to advise I got a new motorbike learners licence today, got to get ready for when the build is complete.

Next - get stack hat, boots and gloves, I'll practice on my daughter's ZZR250.

I found a stack of bearing shells in a bag in amongst the boxes.

The crank is right on spec.

Do I get new shells or reuse the old ones?

My feeling is get new ones.

Also found not 1 but 3 oil pumps!

Cleaned the oil way in the bottom case with a push through

ive used old shells over and again from running engines,not best practise to use unknown bits and pieces though,if they aint scored you can try squeezing them up with plastiguage,if you get a good reading and they aint damaged youll be ok,if its a race/drag engine use new,ive thrashed these little motors for years on old bottom ends with rebored top ends,they handle it,just do it all clean.

don't mix up the caps to rods!run a cap over the rod and youll feel a snag/grab everytime,give them both a few strokes over wet/dry on flat glass and theyll glide with no snags and close up with more precision,polish the shell seating area aswell by hand with say autosol polish,you want perfect shell to backing contact,the heat is transferred squarely then.

which two look polished?its just that its apart now so do it perfectly!

Remember to clean AL the autosol off as it a mild abrasive

Was able to finish the assembly of the front wheel retainer ring ivan suggested I use his thread cleaner he bought it 30 years ago and it did a great job.

A dab of spray grease and it almost spun on, I screwed it off and on a few times and it's great, finally fastened down nice and snug onto the bearing with a special tool which worked beautifully

Tachometer and speedo are nearly finished, was able to put the tachometer back together yesterday, now just waiting on the little chrome nuts and new grommets. Mustn't forget the felt washers around the shafts.

Note the speedo set back to "0".

Dave thanks for the advise, it asked for it! You've thrown me now as I was all set for new bearing shells!

When I had the cylinders honed at Heads Plus he said the bore was completely stock all the main journals were right on spec and the rods were all good - but he suggested new shells for the bottom end.

Dave it'll certainly save money, but how do I know about what one's green or brown etc. as per the code on the back of the cases? Is that a problem? Or doesn't it matter?

No sweat I'm glad you like them. Just remember what your mum said - don't eat too many before dinner time, you'll ruin your appetite.

Bet you've never had an Anzac BISCUIT (not a cookie but a biscuit- by law in Australia) before.

Actually, my sister lived in Melbourne for 5 years. Treated us 1 Xmas to a mixed ton of biscuits. They seem familiar, but not certain. Also turned me onto Tim-Tams. Can't get those here. Tragic-
