I'm GMT -5, but I never sleep anyway.

Can't believe it's time wasting to spend valuable time with a cold and frothy friend??? I'd rather see you devote some idle to that undertaking than dither away scrubbing on rusty metals. Let the goo do the work while you reminisce about the good times forthcoming with a mate. Much better, no?

If our passion for these machines is due to them having a soul, and our interaction with it, then surely it's food to feed ours that we embrace camaraderie and fellowship with beer and mates while we work on or ogle them.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it  ::)

Cal it was a joke, the problem with short notes you can't see the smile on my face as I'm typing. Tongue in cheek.
I still can't believe I'm doing up a 500, last time I rode one was when I was 20 and I loved it.
In some respects I'm enjoying the journey of the restoration rather than the arrival. I can now see the end of the build, I've really enjoyed the camaraderie and encouragement from those who've helped in many ways. Stop it now or you'll make me blubber.

I saw it. And replied entirely tongue in cheek. Let the blubbering commence.

Very impressive and detailed!  Subscribed!  Do not forget the big one rings that go on the outside of the cylinders. Do this before putting the cylinders on the lower end.

Tews I read this in Bootsey's build and am wondering what exactly are you saying?
"Do not forget the big one rings that go on the outside of the cylinder"

Can you please expand on this or explain to me in simpler terms.

All in all it's just another couple of bricks in the wall. A couple more pieces for the jigsaw

l

Just waiting for the swinging arm bolt to marry the nut

Cal by the way, I saw your comments in Dave Barbier's build about changing the clutch plates, cork plates and springs!
You just cost me another couple of hundred bucks -THANKS A LOT, as I thought the clutch I had was ok, but you said to Dave "seeing you're going to all this trouble in the build....."
Then I realised I should also fix the clutch properly in my resto.

I know the economy in Oz is a bit soft, thought I'd do my part vicariously through you.  :)

Where's your swing arm bolt? And tell me you've found a source for a beautiful stainless steel cotter pin for that rear axle. Wouldn't be right slapping any old piece of pot metal in there.

Was able to finish the alloy including carby bodies polishing and lacquering, it's ready for the build - when will the rezinced bolts be ready?

Next true the wheels and fit tyres, not far away before I start building.

Today I picked up the re-zinced nuts, bolts, washers and other parts, I can now start on the engine build all the engine bolts are back.  Long engine bolts zinced and the swinging arm bolt chromed - all nice and shiny.

Mick - be careful with a few of those that were corroded heavily before re-plating. Torquing them down might shear them. To be certain, I'd install them in a test first. Use only the bottom half of the case before fully assembled. Use a bit of lube in the threads, then torque carefully into the bottom half only. This way, if it does shear, you aren't separating the case to retrieve it.

If I had known yours were so badly damaged, I'd have sent you some from one of my motors that weren't buggered up...

And just makes sure you do use thread lube or sealant in all of them installing into the aluminum cases.

Thanks Cal, I sorted through them last night into sizes, I saw what you meant about corrosion, I'll be flicking them. However when sorting, most seemed pretty good, but as per your advice I'll test them up to torque spec before I use them.

I appreciate your advise particularly about the bottom half.

I've copper grease for the threads, locktite to use where recommended and gasket sealant. I need to get some surface cleaner.

Cal in the photos can you point out any specific bolts you believe would be suspect?

Or, are you suggesting I should get new nuts and bolts? If you think i should I don't have an issue with that.

The bolts that "concern" me the most are the M8 flange heads pictured with the pivot bolt. They are the case bolts and they do need full torque. The M6 won't require much more than a firm hand tight, but the case bolts do get a wrench to them.

Cal what I really need to do is make sure I've the correct number of bolts prior to assembly, which is something I didn't think of prior to getting them zinced.

I tried to take note of SohRon's tip about getting bolts that looked in good condition from eBay.

To me the flange bolts looked in pretty good condition. I'll take some photos of the flanged ones and post them for a better inspection.

Cal you mention "concerns", can you explain specifics? Or was it the heavy corrosion?

Yeah, it was just the corrosion on those bolts that caught my eye. I italicised it as a reference. I always either run them on a wire wheel to remove the corrosion, then test their torque strength. Or, I replace them. I've had to make a few that seem unobtainable.

Got back a stack of various items rezinced both in silver and gold

One more step in the long march, polished the breather, now have lots of parts completed and ready for installation.

Also,  parts arrived from CSMNL - seat rubbers  and David Silver - blinkers, Airbox Drain Tube and 4 new chrome  screws for the front mudguard.

Next big job is the truing the wheels, got to stop procrastinating and get rubber on them.

Any suggestions regarding tyres would be most welcome.

Getting a start on the seat, repo pan (fiberglass) and foam (thanks Chaser), drill where rubbers are to be mounted

and decide on whether to rivet seat cover to the pan, open to suggestions.

Waiting on chrome strip from SohRon's tip where to buy it from, the strip is far deeper than most that advertise on eBay.
