But think of the fuels economy with the current power plant! I'm picturing Mick seated, helmet on, rumbling down the street muttering "varooooom, varooooooom, varoooom, whump, whump, whump!"

Who you calling cheap? I've never charged less than full rate for my abuse! Hrmph.

Did I forget what you've done with the tank and side covers? Can't recall seeing those yet?

Don't remind me, side covers are ready for paint, still got to get the tank ready.
Still sooo much to do and so little time.

Cases are together.

QUESTION

Does this oil seal go with the metal face towards the casing? My thought is as the lip faces inwards therefore the metal face goes in facing the engine

Anyone help with torque on casing bolts, barrel and head studs?

Happy with progress today, cases altogether, everything inside moving smoothly with no surprises.

I hope the casing gasket goo (high temperature RTV silicon) I used holds all the oil in the engine.

Tomorrow I hope to get rings on Pistons, barrels on Pistons, head on Pistons, tappet cover on Pistons. Provided all goes smoothly.

I'll let Dave or some other expert confirm your seal orientation. But the case studs depends upon whether you use lubricant/sealant or install dry. 14-16# is the factory spec on the studs. I use a pre-lube, but it's not a requirement.

Are you waiting to paint the cases until after assembly? Or were they vapor blasted and this is the final finish on them?

Cal don't you sleep? I've used an anti seize grease on all threads during the build. I realised the longer threads were in the cases when I pulled them out.

The cases are painted but will be washed down again at the end and given another coat. What have I done wrong? The fact you ask makes me think Oh Magoo you've done it again.

Sleep is for sissies. Besides, I'll sleep when I'm dead. Early morning is the only time I get for myself; else it's go here, do that, see whathisname, pick up that kid, drop that one, blah blah blah.

0400-0700 are very productive times for me.

Re:paint- I asked because the picture didn't make them look too shiny is all. Thought I remembers you had them blasted and painted. Probably just a poor picture. Disregard it.

Cal I'm not really understanding what you mean by "use lubricant/ sealant or install dry?
Trouble with the painted cases is they shown every greasy fingerprint and touch, thus the need to give it a touch up.

One of those varooom's is longer than the other one.  He may want to check his timing.  :D

Mick - some stud manufacturers use a stud lubricant when installing to derive full torque. If you used Antiseize, then you're fine. Some type of thread sealant is always a great idea to prevent galling.

RestoFan - classic! Made my day, thanks  :D

Re the seal, you're correct metal face in. The 14-16ft/lbs is the recommendation for the nut on top of the stud. Studs into the aluminum case should be less but I've never seen a torque value for that. The only thing that comes to mind is the Kibblewhite studs I've used recommend oil on the threads and 8ft/lbs in the case. Long threads into the case as well.

EDIT, I should have finished my thought on the studs....they should bottom out in the hole, then finish torque to 8lbs. At least that is what KPMI recommends.
