I prefer to build when it's hot, but tear down when it's cold, personally. At least then, when you bust a knuckle on a seized, rusted bolt, the freezing air keeps it from hurting so badly initially.  :)

Looking good down there, Mick! Might send you mine to slap together (got two that need your diligent mitts)

Cal thanks for the vote of confidence but, re your 2 engines that need rebuilding I don't think you'd be able to afford my hourly rate. but I was pleased not broken a ring as I put them on the Pistons.

Thanks Cafe Racer, but there's greased marks all over and will need to clean and give it a quick respray.

I dropped the little figure 8 link the goes on the cam chain joiner down the cam chain tunnel!
Off with head and barrels and was lucky to get it out with an extendable magnet first try.

Joined the cam chain and got the barrels back on (like Dave Barbier) the barrels basically dropped on without much difficulty.

.

Question. The 6 rubber plugs/ gaskets that go on the head, can they go in dry or is it better to have some sort of sealer? Mine really fit in very snug, were difficult to pick out.

Some say dry, some say with a dab of sealant. I say dab of sealant as it doesn't hurt and does add a layer of insurance. Starting to look like a motor now!

I don't wish to panic but, I just realised I have forgotten to insert the 2 dowel pins in the bottom case!

Will it cause me problems eg do the cases tend to try to twist when power is applied and are pins there to resist this occurring? Or it'll be ok and don't worry.

I have no answer I'd give you other than; they're there for a reason. If it were me, I'd install them. I've never considered not having them.

Sure that's not what you want to hear, but you've done so much and taken such care, I think you'd better take a few steps back and do it exactly right.

My opinion, maybe Dave500 will drop in and provide a definitive answer.

I agree Cal, during the day I decided to undo it and see if I can just crack the cases a bit and scrape off the dried sealant and reapply sealant and reassemble, or split the cases and replace all the sealant.
What have I got to lose but time. Even so I reckon it'll only be a few hours, in the overall scheme of things it's not much and I'd rest easy it's been done correctly.

Your last idea would be nice, but I still think I'm in Coventry.

I meant "drop in to the thread". Euphemistically speaking, have a drop in. Bloody literal Aussies  ;)

Who knows, maybe he will stop playing with his trailer and turn the key on one of his little beauties and come for a visit? Offer him some tea and biscuits, and see what he says  :)

Calj you're a classic, I've been thinking about your slinging off at B Aussies!
The trouble with Septic Tanks ( Yanks - you may need to look up rhyming slang) is they have no comprehension about other nations, they think you fall off the planet if you  go past Hawaii or the east coast. I bet you think we have kangaroos bouncing down our streets.
I still think Americans all carry colt 45s, in fact many do!
The only thing we have to worry about where I live is Eastern Brown snakes, up with Death Adders in the poison stakes.

"Americans all carry Colts..." Most of us have upgraded to the 1911. Modern technology, Man, keep up with the times!

Eastern Browns and Adders! What a price to pay to live in such a beautiful place? Kind of like SoCalifornians; mud slides, sweeping fires, earthquakes and traffic like you can't imagine, freezing cold ocean water, and some sharks to go with that. All in exchange for the opportunity for gorgeous weather. Not me! I'll endure the Mosquitos in Summer, the 100*+ heat and humidity, and then the winter ice and snow. You can keep your Browns, Adders, and earthquakes. Only thing I want moving under my feet is the people carrier at the airport  :o

By the way, is there anything in Oz (from the animal kingdom) that isnt trying to kill you? You blokes need to learn to cohabitate better with the animals you eat  ;)

hey mick, is there a hidden pin that has to be removed before everything will slide off
of that shaft? I have a real nice one, but somethings keeping me from dis assembling it to install on my bike. Gotta be something holding things on..The rack (what holds that shaft) has a hairline crack on my spare set of carbs, and the shaft is much better than the one on the bike now, that's why i want to change it.
