CB 500 Four (1972?) Full Restoration
« Reply #425 on: November 04, 2014, 10:15:46 pm »
DH there are 2 woodruff keys, one at either end to stop the 2 parts at each end of the shaft from slipping when you turn the throttle. As I recall when these are taken out the rest comes apart. It's 11 months since I pulled them apart and I'm about to start rebuilding the carbs.

Does that help?

There seem to be set screws under those bosses as well. When extracting mine, had to drill them out, and yep, there's Woodruff keys as Mick said, plus felts.

Unless you absolutely have to replace that rod, it's not really designed to be pulled apart easily. Harisuluv has mentioned this a few times in various threads. But if you do, be prepared for the bits involved.

Yours like fantastic Mick! I just spun mine in a lathe to clean it all up as the carbs themselves needed so much repair attention and a spa day in the UltraSonic cleaner.

I can't really recall the shaft as it was so long ago the pulling apart, but I do remember some trick to rival. I took photos but no photo shows any thing out of the ordinary.

The guy did an ace job, it was really badly pitted. I think it came up so well because he was getting it ready to chrome before you advised regarding his kids university fund and I changed it to zinc.

CALJ...
I was figuring it was something along those lines. I got everything loose, but can't slide the shaft out. This makes sense...

MICK..
Thanks for the diagram. I'm thinking too, that the whole assembly is  non serviceable, and designed to be replaced as a single unit, as per calj... My spare is in beautiful condition, but the aluminum rack as mentioned, has a hairline crack at one end and the shaft has a tight spot in it when turned 360 degrees. For all i know, it may be bent, but it's gotta come out to examine everything. I don't have a dial indicator to measure runout of the shaft, and I want to see the inside of those holes that the shaft passes thru.

DH no I don't think it's a single unit, I was able to pull mine apart.
I'll come back to you shortly.
Have you sprayed any PB Blaster?

DH note the groove that circles the shaft, probably where a grub screw goes in, I think this is the problem you have.

I have accidently slightly bent the top ring on #3, it still turns but is slightly harder to turn than the others which turn freely.
I read the ring should be replaced if it doesn't spin freely.
Do I need a new ring?

My thought is yes.

Help me please, putting the front end together and I've struck a problem. I thought there'd be no gap (see photo), I have every part, the axle is 160mm across.

Only half of the speedo end is sitting in the fork.

See the gap (I know the seal is missing), it strikes me this gap shouldn't be there?

Looks brillinat, Mick. No front or rear fender? Also, you are aware of the dimples on the bottom fork cap to indicate forward direction, correct?
