Every time I've ever done them on a 550, i have had to separate the air cleaner from the plenum, and slide it back
enough to provide clearance for removal of carbs and air cleaner boots. After making adjustments to the carbs,
I set the carbs in a pan, prop them upright, and check fuel levels using the clear tube method. If they need further adjustments, you can perform them with the carbs still off the bike.
