Picked up the tank and side covers, still very green paint, I'm going to leave set for a week or so. He's put a metal fleck trough the clear and in the sun it really sparkles, photo doesn't really show it.









Went to put the cap on the tank (I've had it waiting in a box for 12 months) - see what I thought was a crack in the chrome is a line of glue, whew!

I've looked in Tips and Tricks and can't see anything about the petrol cap installation.

Does anyone have some photos on how the petrol cap goes on, specifically the spring orientation?

It would be a big help

Got the cap Spring on with help from Impala (Cameron) on eBay (where I bought the cap.

I also needed to very carefully cut off a little paint at the tips of the little tank lugs/ cap support to enable me to be able to slip the cap and catch mechanism onto the little posts.

All on without a scratch.

Note the spring orientation, may help someone needing to put on their cap.



Cal what do you think about the paint around the tank opening? Do I need to sand it back further?

Good work getting the spring on! - I slightly damaged my new paint job wrestling that sucker onto mine - patience is a hard lesson for me to learn, I wish I'd asked for tips first!
The paint around your neck is definately a little too high! That is about where mine was at when I got it back from being resprayed - I couldn't believe it when a week later the paint bubbled out all around the filler!
I trimmed the bubbled area off and it turned out looking alright when the cap's closed, but again if only I'd asked for tips first....
I think Calj will agree with me-
You need an actual definate gap between the paint and the caps rubber seal (when it's fully compressed closed)

Yours is right on the edge to where I'd want mine. If you do remove any more paint, obviously tape off the tank to protect it dearly.

If you look at the neck, imagine the top of it as a complete donut. I pull the paint back to the bottom edge of the donut, not the tangent. Yours appears to only have the top of the ring, not even quite to the tangent back to bare metal. Don't know if that reads clearly or not? Maybe just make sure 3-5MM from very top of neck down is clean.

And is that overspray on the interior of the neck? Gas will eat that obviously and the diluted paint will make its way to the carbs... :(

I think your painter did a top shelf job as the paint looks fantastic! These are just nuances that not every painter knows/thinks about. And they learn it only after someone comes back with a bubbled up paint job.

Cut the paint down around the neck, Cal is this enough? The grey inside the neck was spray primer all removed





Added chrome strip around the tank, looks far better I believe, comments?





2 Coats of Carnauba Wax - the wax on the tank and covers looks amazing in the light.

I just have to say, reading this thread has been an inspiration for me.

I was helping my dad rebuild engines when I was 5, started welding when I was 9, started restoring cars when I was 15 and have rebuilt dozens of old machines since. But you're working on another level.

I really am impressed. What you've done here is admirable!

mick, that tank looks fantastic. It's cool that you chose a color other than stock, but stayed with the original style
 striping and black panel. I've often wondered how these bikes would look given that treatment. Checking this build thread daily with interest, and waiting for the magic.  8)

We're on the process of selling (sold) and moving house so not much done.

Today put petrol (gas to the uneducated) in it today and 2 of the tubes (2 and 3) had petrol pouring out.

The float settings are not correct I presume?

Do I need to pull the carbies off and redo the floats? It's probably the best I presume, if so can I pull them off without having to pull the air filter off? Or can I just take the rubber connectors off and will that give me enough space to pull the carbies off?

Every time I've ever done them on a 550, i have had to separate the air cleaner from the plenum, and slide it back
enough to provide clearance for removal of carbs and air cleaner boots.  After making adjustments to the carbs,
I set the carbs in a pan, prop them upright, and check fuel levels using the clear tube method. If they need further adjustments, you can perform them with the carbs still off the bike.
