Stupid PO trick?
« on: October 14, 2013, 11:11:07 AM »
So I finally got around to putting on my 520 conversion on the 550.

I discovered the FRONT sprocket appears to be a 520 already, but the back was still a 530?

Stupid PO trick?

Or is there a stock reason for the differences?

No reason for the difference except maybe stupidity, incompetence,  or desperation. The 520 sprocket will work with 530 chain (not vice-versa!) and either the PO didn't have a clue and bought the wrong size (stupidity), a parts dude got him the wrong part (incompetence), or the old sprocket was really really bad and a 520 was all that could be found (desperation).

You can get away with it for a while but it will eat up the chain and sprockets.
520 is the pitch between centers.
So by using a #530 the pitch is longer.

It is like telling someone to never weld on a gas tank that has had gas in it.
They will tell you that so and so does it all the time.

Then one day you realize you have not heard from them for a long time.

The second number in chain is WIDTH not Pitch
520 is 2/8 or an inch wide
530 is 3/8 of an inch wide

Looks like the PO did you a favor

Well, looking at the number on the wheel, it says it is a 320!

15 tooth.

Replaced with a 520 18 tooth. Gonna be a different bike, that is for sure!

Not really, a 520 and a 530 are the same pitch. As mentioned already, the difference is in the width. You can get away with a 530 chain on 520 sprockets alright, but there isn't really any reason to unless you cannot find a 530 sprocket anywhere (which isn't the case for these bikes...). Chances are the PO had no idea what he was doing and got lucky that he mixed parts in a way that doesn't cause any issues.

You know why he is named Lucky?

he is lucky if he gets it right.

I looked, there is no chain size I can find that is "320" so it is likely just a part number of some sort.

Thanks for that detail info. I was told that number WAS the pitch.
Thanks for educating me on that.

Everybody is wrong sometimes.
I admitted my mistake .

I usually use a #530 chain with a #530 sprocket so I have not run into any problems.

Putting a 18 on it really changed the nature of the bike.

It is not nearly as fast off the line, but that is not as important to me. I would buy a crotch rocket if it was... take off from first is a lot less thrashy, and I hit 40mph at about 8K, so redline is probably 45ish now.

What is nice is that 55 mph is now about 3800K in 5th, and 65mph is around 5K. Much easier on the engine and me to be 1200 rpms lower. Vibration is not nearly as bad.

4th is now just under where 5th was, and 5th is now a suitable 6th. With the 650 cam in the bike, top end power is still good. I can crack it open at 65mph and it goes to 70 or 75 right quick.

4th is now a better climbing gear and I don't think I have to thrash between 4 and 5 so much on the local roads.

17 might have been a better choice, but this is fine for now.

the stock 17/37 setup gives around 5000 rpm at 100kph(60mph).

Where did you get your 520 sprockets?

call up and talk to the man, he will get you what you need.

Be prepared to wait, he has to send them out for machining and if it is an aluminum sprocket then it has to be re-hardened.

The chain he provides is really nice too, worth getting unless you already have some 520s O-ring lying around.
