Fuel leaking from intake filter #1
« on: October 15, 2013, 07:44:39 AM »
I have my bike on the center stand. It's a cb550 with K&N pod filters. I'm about to go drop off the bike for winter storage and notice that when I put the Percocet on, fuel starts leaking from the first intake filter. Fuel is going through the filter and dripping. I am checking the overflow tubes and notice some fuel coming out so I tap the bowls to dislodge anything that might be in there. It works, but I am stil getting fuel coming out the intake filter.

Any ideas?  :(

Sounds like you got something wrong with your float valve. Maybe some debris under it?

+1
Clean your carbs and check float operation.

I had this problem too a few days ago. Carbs Mikuni VM29. Gasoline flowed out from the hole for pilot jet on the filter side.
Removed float bowl, floats and valve needle. Put it back again and problem gone. Floats stucked or just debris in the valve....

Just a suggestion but whatever it is you want to fix it now, before trying to ride it again. My buddy had a similar problem, minor fuel leak into air filter box, "No biggy, gotta get around to that sometime..."

He went to start it, a little backfire and WHOOSH! Lit the filter box on fire, quickly turned into a disaster. Fortunately someone close had a fire extinguisher and the bike was saved and tank didn't blow up. Enough damage to keep him busy a long time.

^What he said.. that, or it goes the other way and gets down past the rings and contaminates your oil. It's most likely a stuck float. And because it's from #1, you should be able to pop the bowl off and clean and/or replace it on the bike. Remember - if you replace it, you need to replace the seat AND the needle as a set. Good luck!
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Everyone. Thanks so much for the help. I just cleaned it out and no more leak!  Woohoo. And a tip to anyone that reads this thread. I found that my float bowl gasket was stretched out. I found a tip on the thread to put it in some boiling water for a min and guess what? It went back to its original shape. Reinstalled the cleaned float bowl and boiled gasket and I'm running fine as of 20 minutes ago!

congrats!  now before you store it for the winter, make sure to properly winterize it so that your carbs aren't all gummed up come springtime!

Next time, wait for the Percocet to fully dissolve so the chunks don't block the float valve open.
