Front brake piston not retracting??
« on: September 25, 2013, 07:18:28 PM »
Hey y'all,

my front brake seized up on me a while ago and when i went to take it apart i realized that the bleeder screw was broken off in the caliper, I just bought the bike not to long ago and didn't realize when i bought it. On top of that the guy had tried to get it out with a screw extractor and had broken that off inside the bleeder screw so there was no chance of getting that thing out. So i bought a new caliper and a rebuild kit from eBay.

After installing it and bleeding the brake line, i noticed that the front wheel was locked up again. I guess the piston was retracting inside the caliper, so I figured I should rebuild the master cylinder, which I did.

Just finished putting it all back together and bleeding the line again.... same problem, brakes aren't retracting. When pulling the brake lever it is super stiff about half way through and almost impossible to bottom out.

Any thoughts??

There is a small bleed hole in the master cylinder, make sure it is clear. It's in the bottom of the second hole that appears not to be drilled all the way through.

2 things:

Are the pads new? If its an older pad, you'll need to make sure the clearance between the caliper and pads is sufficient to allow full movement. For me, this involved "scraping" in the caliper with a scotch brite pad. This take care of the corrosion that may have built up.

Second, do you have the screw spring adjustment correct? This is what allows the pads to be centered with the rotor. If the screw is too tight, then the pads will always be touching the rotor, locking the front wheel.

Do you mean a brand new caliper or just new to you I.E. used, if used did you clean the seal groove out properly?
