Disconnecting electrical wires on the 72 750
« on: October 19, 2013, 05:16:30 pm »
I've been trying to take my bike apart, starting with all the bolt-ons like all the lights, foot-pegs etc. but I can't for the life of me get the tail light to come off. The wires are extremely snug and there is almost no room to even try and pull them apart at those clear enclosures. I took off the red plastic shroud, but no luck there, nothing in there to help disconnect the wires....help?

Disconnect the wires under the seat so you can have some slack to get at the wires under the bracket...

Couldn't disconnect from under the seat, but I managed to get them to come apart with long nose pliers. Phew. Went ahead and took off the winkers as well, only to find that the right rear winker has the red-blue wire spliced with an orange piece, which further down the line is spliced with a green piece, ugh. Thanks for the help though! Will keep at it and try to get all the light off in the next few hours.

red blue is not a standard Honda color combo.  Right signal will be blue, left orange.  Green is always ground...Larry

Here is what I did, hopefully this will help out another hypernoob like me someday. AND, maybe the experts here can see what else is wrong with it :)

All that whining about the tail light, the headlight just took it to a whole another level. Seriously WTH is up with that rat's nest?

In hopes of leaving a breadcrumb to follow during re-assembly, I started marking whatever I could on those clear cases. But the headlight and taillight clear cases came off with them, so I used twisty ties to mark the blue and white. Pic 2 shows W.G which is the common winker ground. Pic 3 shows the grounds apart.

Two black wires of the left winker and the first black wire of the right.

Second black wire of the right winker. Speedo and Tach share the same junctions. Disconnected them and taking a break now. Will get the gauges off next, then continue with the electrical stuff.

Skipping baby steps as I followed the same process as above, labeling things as I pull them off and the dome is now off, along with throttle, clutch, dash, gauges and switches. In the second pic, holding the throttle open a bit helps with taking off the second throttle cable.

Unless something really odd has happened with your wiring harness, there's no need for marking: the color coded wires are the marking. Wiping the wires with a bit of isopropyl or even windex gets the gunge off and the colors will be very visible. There are a few oddball ones - the turn/marker signal wires have colored rings on them to show the "wire" color that indicates the side for example - but as a rule you plug the colored wires into the same color wire. The female connector will be the "power" end and the male one will be the "load" end.

Yep, there are some odd splices here and there, really not sure what else I'll find, so leaving a breadcrumb for myself. The more I unravel it, the more I'm inclined to replace the harness altogether.

Not sure what the one connection hanging loose is for, ideas? Also, the ignition switch in pic 2, is there a trick to pulling that apart? Its a bit different than the ones on cars obviously.

I really should find out the name of this part in pic 1 that had the engine side and the battery side connected to it, for that matter, I need to know the names of them all, for now I just labeled them P1, P2 etc.

After marking an unplugging, it moved out of the way and the next P2 unplugged and came off with ease
