1971 CB500 Fork Cap Bolts
« on: October 20, 2013, 11:48:05 AM »
Hi All - the fork cap bolts on the 71 500 (U.S. model if that matters) I'm restoring have pitted chrome plating, so I wanted to replace them.  Found a new set on ebay, part number matches what I found online for this bike (90123-300-000), but the bolts are about 3-4mm longer than what was in there, and they won't screw all the way into the fork leg so that the 0-ring will seal correctly.

Anyone run into this and have a suggestion for finding the correct ones?

(did a search but didn't find anything, please direct me to a thread if there is one, thanks...)

First find out what exactly your model is and then check the Parts List.
Differences between the K(0), K1 and K2 are listed here with pictures. I dunno about USmodels though. You'll find the different caps when you scroll all the way down.

That part number IS NOT correct for a 71 500 fou, it should be 90123-323-010

Bryanj is correct, all American 500s had the 90123-323-010 caps.
The 90123-300-000 caps were on the '76 500K2 [ED, F, G].

What do his caps fit? 76 500?

Well duh. I shuda caught that.  Sell em to a 750 guy, like me. Get another set for a 500.

Here you can enter any part number under Quick Part Search. Then click select model and you'll have an overview. Quite convenient.

-The early 500 ones are not easy to get now as they have the threaded hole for the long damper rod, but all you have to do is drill and tap the later ones so you can screw in the rod. DO NOT be tempted to run without the rod screwed in as should you lift the bike high enough the fork sliders can fall off the forks!!!
