Hole in Front Axle?
« on: October 23, 2013, 05:02:16 AM »
OK, don't laugh!
I looked in both the parts fiche and the Service Manual and couldn't find the answer, so I'm checking with you guys.

I replaced the front brake pads on my 74 CB750 and after I got everything re-assembled I noticed something I hadn't seen before. The right side of the front axle has a hole in it and I can't remember if it was there before. I've attached a couple of photos. Photo 15 is of the right side showing the hole in the axle. Photo 18 is the left side of the axle. Do I have this re-assembled correctly? There weren't any parts left over (always a good sign). If correct, what is the hole used for?
Thanks!

That does not look correct. Mine are nice and flush fitting on my 74-750. Here are a couple pics to show. Your drain plug on the one side (disc side) should be in the backside of the fork and not the front also if I am seeing the picture correctly on #18.May not be a true pair of lowers.

That's a hole to use when taking the axle apart - put a screwdriver in there and use a wrench on the long nut on the other end; don't worry it is supposed to be there.

Did  he flip the long nut on the other side?  That would explain the sixtagon on the second picture.

Start again.
Remove wheel from forks.

Assembly: install the axle from RH side (speedo drive side). install spacer, install nut with hex part against the spacer. tighten axle. use screwdriver in hole to stop axle turning. done, fit wheel to forks. fit lower fork caps. F or arrow facing to the front, tighten these nuts first (this will put the gap to the back) some say the other way round, but i have always done it with the gap to the back.

Sure enough, looks like the axle nut has the incorrect orientation. Should be installed with the hex side of the nut facing towards the hub.

Refer to the 750 K diagram, part number #13. The torque spec for the nut is: 37.8 to 47.0 (ft-lbs)

OK, thanks!
Back to the drawing board.
I'll take it back apart tonight and re-assemble it.

The hole was supposed to be there so you could put the stock phillips screwdriver
from the supplied tool kit through the hole to pull the axle out.

The hole is there but not sticking out in the breeze. Do both of the drain plug screws on the lower fork legs sit at the lower back of the forks or is one or more pointed towards the front like I thought I saw in your picture ? For some reason every time I see your pics they look flipped like they are on the wrong sides. Is the fender mounted right now ?

Speaking of important details.....
Make sure the caps that go on the bottom of the front forks are facing the right direction.
They should have arrows pointing forward. Not all models, but the 77-78's had them.

Add to the above torque the nuts, front first then the rear nuts.
