1981 CB650 Starter solenoid
« on: August 26, 2006, 10:34:49 PM »
one of the many problems on the bike I bought is the starter button does not activate the starter..  a screwdriver across the solenoid does..(of course the starter clutch is out... so ...)  I did a voltage check, and got 10+ of the clutch but less off the starter switch.  I got an el cheapo generic starter solenoid from an auto parts store.. (before I realized the starter solenoid also is the main power distribution with the 30 amp fuse..) I went between the starter switch and a the clutch safety..  pulling the clutch lever would turn the starter over, but pushing the start button... nothing.. so, I was wondering how many volts the start button should put onto the solenoid..  (it's probably bad anyway.. everything else is screwed up on the bike...    there I go... being all positive again)   I do have a wiring harness from a 1980 cb650... but haven't had the time to put it on yet.. waiting till the 3-day weekend..  just curious..  also.. anyone had any luck using contact cleaner on a solenoid?

Thanks!
Seth

Been there, done that. Your problem is in the wiring. Remove the right switch and remove the shrink tubing and you will more thn likely find a few cut or broken wires. Fix this and your starter switch should work. BTW, the switch just shorts to ground, completing the circuit.
