Random Question, how did you go about lowering the front end? Also do you or anyone have a link to where I can get the rear lowering blocks? I want to lower a 550 so the girlfriend can fit on it without tip toes.

You can lower the front a couple of inches without any modifications by pushing the forks up in the tripple tree.  JC Whitney sells the lowering blocks, or you could go for shorter shocks.

Okay......fabbed/hammered out some of the new alloy tank for the CB500.

The top is a little more squared then I was really wanting, but.....i'm really starting to like it more square. Seems the more a look at it...the more I like it. Still need to weld in the other side and form up a tunnel. Not bad progress for just a few hours in the garage tonight.

Enjoy the pics!!

...this next image makes the top of the tank look strange for some reason....

greg did you used to post on Chopper underground? think ive seen your post somewhere , man that is a bad azzzed bike.  got any more detail on the seat cowell???   is the rear part and area under seat one peice???   are the edges at rear rolled? a buddy came up with an idea of cutting one side of a round hollow alum tube and slipping it over raw edge, I dont have the skill or tools yet to roll it.  man ya need to post it on CU in streetfighter section theyll go nuts

Okay.....got the new alloy tank finished. Turned some of the alloy at the front(scallops) and painted the rest flat black. Waiting on a guy to stop over and do some pinstriping on the tank......similar to what you'd see on the old hot rods. Installed a new Pingel petcock, that mounts off the side of the tank.....looks really nice in person. Also....painted the stock side covers.

Got a new 16" rim...will be breaking down the old rear wheel in the next few days and installing that on the old CB500 hub. Throw on some new wide whitewall tires.....and finish the seat and this one is done.

Here are a few pics of the new tank:

....ignore some of the lines where the flat black meets the turned alloy....some of the pic after resizing distorted them.

Greg

I sprayed clear over the turned alloy, over the scallops.......but not over the flat black. Experimented around before painting the tank and the clear over the flat black, wont let it fully return to a true flat.....still has a slight shine to it....didnt like it.

So....the turned alloy is protected.

Greg, The work you have done, on that tank, is really bringing it together. At first, I wasn't sure about it but, you really had a lot more insight than I did (apparently). I should have known! Can't wait to see more. Later on, Bill

You obviously have a good project going here, but what are you using to resize your photos? It's making the lines on the bike look like ass, which you already know.

This bike has been lowered about 3" in the front and about 3.5" in the rear. In order to lower the front...we had to dismantle the internals and remachine them to compress the forks down 3"....alot of work. The forks still operate in the same manner as stock.....just less dampening rod travel. For the rear.......just purchased some of those 11" short shocks and found some lowering blocks on ebay.....dropped it about 3.5" to 4" in the rear.

This bike sits pretty low(seat height is about the same as my sons KTM 50).....but is stil very ridable. Just have to watch out for those nasty Ohio potholes in the spring.

What are the handlebars?  Looks like they are 1" in the center and slim down to the stock 7/8" for mounting the controls?  How did you mount them on the triple tree?

The bars are a set of "Pro Taper" MX handlebars I had laying around. They are very fat(maybe 1.25") at the clamps and taper down to 7/8" at the grips. There are universal handle bar clamps you can purchase to mount the fat bars to your stock 7/8" triple clamps.......do a search at DennisKirk.com...I know they have them. Here is a link:
http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=Main&catId=115&productId=p594617&leafCatId=11503&mmyId=

These bars are great.....used them alot when racing the arenacross(MX) a few years ago. They take out alot of the vibration and jarring while racing.....will be interesting to see how they feel on a street bike. ;D

Good Looking Bike,
Although the tank has been the ongoing topic, I am curious about the foot rests and the shifter and brake controls.
What did you use and where did you get them. If you made them....can you give details, and closeup pics?

Those floorboards were purchased off Ebay about 2 years ago. They were leftover NOS from the 70s....brand new..still in the package. Made by a company called "Triple A". I tried researching them......doesnt look like they are around anymore, but seems they made alot of aftermarket products for the Honda CB's. Heres a pics of the floorboards before I put them on:

...more pics and info at my website.

Also.......got the bike up and running over the weekend. Put on some new Maxxis whitewall tires...along with the new 16" rear rim. Still need to finish the exhaust and seat. Will post some new pics later tonight.

Sorry bout that....... ;)

I've seen a couple other used sets listed awhile ago......havent looked lately. The NOS set I got.....didnt bolt right up, even though they were made specifically for the CB500/CB550s. Had to machine a brake lever tab down and elongate a couple mounting holes. Everything mounts and works great now.

Chippy....they would look sweet on that bike of yours.....need to find you a set!!
