The thing to do in the 70's was to allow the auto-lube to the chain do its thing............to keep the chain well lubed.........so numerous styles of chainguards were offered to help keep the rest of the bike somewhat clean. We know that this particular bike has been to a few Navy yards on the east coast and took one or more trips to Sturgis.

Regarding the pipe-doo...........At first I thought that it may have been from my garage critters (despite the cat) but now that I see the doo...........it is from the Wisconsin north woods where the bike was stored for the last year or more before it moved to my garage.  Just wait to see how nice those pipes will clean up.

A little more history about the bike was revealed to me...........The long-time owner proudly road the bike to work at H.D. a few times before it was parked in the late 80s - early 90s. He was hired to head a new department..........quality control.  Apparently they needed someone to oversee the growing number of foreign parts being installed at the factory.

Hi Johnnie -   What's your process to clean the fenders (chrome) up?  The front looked like it had some light surface rust, cleaned up really well.  Fun to see the bike emerge as the layers of storage are wiped off. ;D

Tews...I am not kidding. That is what I got out...and that was the 2 left pipes. The right side was fine. I heard they were stored so probably in a spot the animals could put stuff in them. I am really glad I checked those pipes for trash...I would have hated to blow a seam or something. Those acorns flying out on start up could put out a window  ;D

Greggo...according to old scrambler these are not Lotus pipes.

Hall...the chain guard does cover the chain top and bottom. I think it was on there so oil did not splash up on the driver and rider as they were in the Navy and oil did not look good on those white pants. I am sourcing the proper shorty chain guard...anyone have an extra I can buy?

Jerry - the process I used on those fenders. First I tried some Semi-Chrome...forget it. Needed something more aggressive. So I did what has worked for me in the past. 0000 steel wool and WD40 spray. I then can lightly rub and the rust comes off with no damage to the chrome. I finish up with the Semi-Chrome. The secret is to not push to hard as you do not want to scratch the chrome or remove it.

I will get some pics of the pipes up tomorrow. Still need to give them the Semi Chrome treatment. They will look awesome and it is nice to not have to try and source the exhaust. I think I will have better luck finding the correct chain guard.

Today I got the no number exhaust polished and set for pics as promised. They will look good on this KO. Got the like new heat shields from old scambler a year ago never knowing they were going to be used on a bike from him. Did I mention I am looking for a shorty KO chain guard...guess I did  ;)

Hall from what I understand they were hanging in a dealership and were take offs back in the day. Must have been hanging around for a long time until someone noticed them. And here I thought you were sending me notice you had a chain guard for me :)

You've seem this one on ebay haven't you? Think its the type you would need and looks to be in fair shape. But mistermonkeyclaw is the seller and hasn't he been in our Bad Seller section numerous times or am I thinking of another seller with a similar name? He's in your territory though Appleton,Wisconsin

Yah, he advertises that as a 1970, but it looks to be from the K1...longer snout. My other KO is really a snub nosed one. That is what I am looking for. I may pay monkeyclaw a visit in Appleton to see what he has in person.

Johnie, Keep your eyes open for me on a #2 341 and I'll do the same on your early shorty KO guard. Deal ;D Hahaha!!! I think either part is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack :(

You are correct hall. I may end up just getting it from Yamiya as this is the only thing missing on this 10/69 KO.

Expensive?  Prolly worth it regardless to keep the value of the bike high.

Johnie that enclosed guard is nothing that Honda had available back in the day to put on these bikes to help with the oil throw. Isn't it just something the PO rigged up?

Steve-o the Yamiya KO guard is $200 with shipping. A good one here is in the same price range. One on eBay went for $350 stupid money.

Hall that guard on this KO is an aftermarket product. That other KO I did back in 2007/2008 had the original guard, but added an aftermarket bottom half that would mate up with the original guard. The pic below is of that guard.

On this 10-69 KO I see the PO has taken the oiler out and installed a regular sprocket bolt in there. That solved his chain oil issue.

Have made some progress. Got the carbs back on the rack still need to finish those. Probably not going to fire this up until spring with the weather and deer hunting. Did get the starter button replaced and high/low beam switch replaced this weekend. I am a bit concerned with the pitting on the rear rim. Might have to source one of those in better condition. The front not as bad as the rear.

If that's a rolled rear rim Johnie, it's worth the cost of re-chroming.
