Recommended Spare Parts (CB750 K5)
« on: October 28, 2013, 06:35:08 PM »
Hi,

I'm a new owner this week of a CB750 K5. Just curious if there was any consensus on recommended spare parts to have stashed away. I'm new to motorcycles. This is my first, but I have zero intention of ever parting with my CB. So I'll probably need parts at some point!

Thanks, Joseph.

Welcome with your K5. Is it a blue or a red one. When you post up a pic we will tell you what you need and what you should have one or two of  :D

If you've never had an old bike before, extra set of points.

All the above, plus, keep a watchful eye on craigslist. You can get some great deals there and even if you get a pile of parts you can't use, you could possibly trade those off for what you do want/need.

Become a hoarder , buy everything and anything related to a cb750. I now have (with my partner) about 11 bikes and a 20x30 shop full of stuff and still it's not enough !!

Basic stuff, ignition parts , plugs ect... tires , tubes , cables , handle bars , fuses , bulbs, oil , filters , seals ,(the shifter, kicker, tach drive seals can be replaced very easily) gaskets , carb parts (kits) exhaust donuts , swing arm bushings , tapers for the triple tree , a shop manual ,paper or digital , you see the list can go on and on !!!
Welcome and above all enjoy your new bike !!
Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

...And NEVER, EVER, throw any part you've taken off the bike away.
Set them aside safely. I.E. you change seats, and in haste, you discard the old one. Then you discover the hinge/latch assy, and other misc. parts were left on the old seat....And the trash man just came an hour ago....Or, a year later, someone needs a seemingly trivial but no longer available part and it's associated nuts/bolts,
and this is what you threw away. And its worth $$. You get ANOTHER CB. and it's missing parts that you once had, but THREW AWAY...
See where I'm goin, eh? ;)

Is the bike complete? If not, buy the missing parts to get the bike into OEM shape when you find parts for a good price.
Service parts are ignition plate with points etc or a complete alternative as PAMCO Ultimate, tires, new rims with spokes if they are rusty, drive chain with sprockets, oil, filter, air filter if you do not have replacement as KN that you clean and oil again, spark plugs NGK D8EA.....
If you have photos of your bike you will get advice about what to buy.  When you start to replace ugly faded and corroded parts with new, the other parts that initially looked OK looks ugly and must be replaced too.

First, thank you for all the replies. I'm a believer in maintaining what I own and so collecting (hoarding?) spares will become a new hobby.

The frame number indicates a 1975. The engine number a 1977. I notice the warning indicators are not correct for a '75. Nor the front fender. Maybe someone before me has been swapping parts, or perhaps I have a '77 front end on a '75 frame?

I'm sure there's other missing or inappropriate parts that I'll deal with over time.

I've already got the proper indicator mounting plate coming from eBay. Along with some spare gauges and an oil pump (so I can rebuild it and have on the shelf).

Still haven't ridden it. I signed up for our local MSC. Need to order a helmet!

Joseph.

Nice aluminum rim on the front, can't remember did the 750 automatics have those along with a rear 17". Your back looks like the stock 18" steel rim.

Welcome.

I’d suggest having the spare fuses as originally equipped by Honda for your 750 K5. The stock fuse cover has a provision to carry 3 spare fuses.

Maybe I do have a 750A front rim. Below are a couple of pictures I just pulled from eBay. One is aluminum rim from a 77 750A and the other a steel rim from a 74 750K (according to the description).

Is it a "bad" thing to have the wrong rim? Performance? Authenticity? Maybe I'll add front rim to my list of future corrections.

Regarding electrical and ignition. I'm thinking of - for reliability - changing to a Pamco system. Any thoughts? And also is there any way of moving to blade style fuses in place of the glass old school fuses?

Regards.

Pamco is great, I run it for years.

For the fuse block, Hondaman offers one; actually he has ignition too:
