OK, with my transmission having magically self-healed and a few odds and ends having arrived, I realized I could button up a lot of things, and so I did.
Replaced the neutral switch and the wiring and installed some new bulbs in the bezel and sure enough, the last of my electrical gremlins was squashed, all the lights and switches all working perfectly. This was the part of the project I was the most stressed about and in fact it went really well other then the neutral fiasco, so that was good progress compared to the last restoration's thrashings.
Replaced the left side crankcase cover and shifter, done.
Hemmed and hawed for a few minutes and finally pulled off the footpeg, clutch cover and kickstart lever, and replaced the sacked clutch springs with a set of Barnetts.
Pulled the plugs and the C5 ignition, replaced the stock advancer plate to set TDC and adjusted the valves. Replaced the C5, set TDC, buttoned that all back up, done.
Installed my old headlight and ring, as the Emgo I got from Niche Cycles was incorrect (Grrr!), got the wiring stuffed in there.
Pulled off the headers and pulled out the NE brand gaskets - found #2 definitely was leaking. Replaced them all with a set of Vesrah that fit a lot better. Tightened it all up, done.
Installed the front fender, puzzled over the fit of the stays, left them off for now.
Installed the side covers, pulled down the tank, installed the petcock and then discovered that it was too narrow, both at the cups and at the sheet metal. 10 minutes with the die grinder on the metal cup to relieve a good 3/16 from each side and that was no longer the issue, but the rubber pucks also had to be relieved 1/4 inch to clear. Once that was done it fit well, but not before I scratched up my frame up under the tank.
Popped the seat on, cleaned up a month's worth of greasy fingerprints, stood back and saw this, at last:
