Those locating pins usually come out easy enough if they've not be abused somehow. Try spraying some brake cleaner or the like to plus lots of compressed air to dry the oil from the hole then use a strong magnet. That one though seems deeper than normal so it may be tough. They are hard pins.

Excellent, just what I needed to know. I'm fearful of not having that bearing properly pegged in place there. Clearly it spun some, at least a bit, as that case is pretty scuffed. I will try all of those suggestions, plus maybe heating the case too.

Do you think a diamond tipped bit in a mill or drill press would drill it, maybe spin it free? I think a hardened pin might scoff at my manky drill bits.

OK lads, here's where we're at.

I have made a few attempts at extracting those pins - the tip of a razor will get a little purchase but it won't budge them. Have soaked them in a good jet of brake cleaner, will then try to drive out the oil as suggested and see if I can kind-of float them out like that. My retrieval tool's magnet is now totally feeble, so I ordered a couple rare-earth magnets from Amazon, and when those arrive I will make a full assault on them. Just for fun I did try to drill them with a garden-variety but new drill bit. They scoffed. Hardly marked them.

My thought is to extract them, and put a teeny coil of thin solder beneath them to hold them a bit higher, reinsert them making sure I didn't go too far. Thoughts? Suggestions?

The better of the two:

The one that broke:

That busted bearing definitely spun at least a little, but no real carnage. I think it will be fine once it's well pegged in place. Doing both for good measure.

More easter eggs: Circlip on the primary shaft was not installed correctly, bearing was not seated all the way, seemed slightly cocked. I removed it and it was a little rough. Happy to discover it's a common bearing, can pickup two in the morning for $13 ea, replacing them both.

Scraped and scrubbed all the crankcase mating surfaces with acetone and Scotchbrite, just about ready to put it back together with the new bearings and seals as soon as I can get those pins extracted and raised up. Planning on Thursday.

More as soon as I am celebrating the pin extraction.

Take it to a machine shop.  When I broke off a bolt inside our case, I took it to a machine shop and they very easily got it out for $25.

One more for tonight:

Here's the side that had the broken bearing. Notice that the crankcase sealant isn't really smooshed flat:

This makes me think the bearing was not seated on the pin when the case halves were joined, which held the case halves apart a skosh, and cracked that bearing with the pressure of the pin pressing on it with the crankcase bolt torque.

NH,
I think you are correct about the bearing not being seated on the pin correctly when the case halves were joined.
I'm ashamed to admit it but the first time I took apart my engine I did the exact same thing!
Luckily no damage was done (except to my ego) and I was able to take it apart and figure out my oil leak problem right away.

Hope that pin just pops right out for you!

Nils.
A drill bit won't touch that pin as you've found out. I like the rear earth magnet idea. I hadn't thought of those. If you can't get that to budge with some heat around area with the magnets I'd find a local machinist. He'll need a carbide tip bit with your cases clamped down square on a mill deck. Don't try it with a 3/8 drill it'll slide to the side and you'll munch the case. A dab of JB weld in the bottom of the hole should be enough to set the pin up high enough. I think solder might be to soft.
On another note lookey what I bought.  :) :) :) know of any back roads in your neck of the desert?

Dude! That bike looks MINT. Big departure from your last land missile. How are you liking the big goofy GS?

I love my GS.

Thanks for the ideas, up to my elbows in the H2, more later.

I love the thing! I bought it on New Years Day for $7800. It's has Ohlins, Ztechnic full systems, and a bunch of other goodies. It needed a tune up bad but it runs perfect now and only has 28k on it. Keep it up with the H2.

Just scrolled through your photo album. Ahh, new love. Bike looks fantastic and those are all the best goodies, including those bags. There is something magical about the GS. It's hard to quantify. Congrats and enjoy.

Are you involved with the rebuild of that giant engine?

That looks amazing. What're the specs on that thing and what does it do? Generator?

Oh ya. This is a Caterpillar Marine Propulsion engine model 3608. It's a 3200 HP inline 8 that shares a common gear box with the port (left side) engine. This is the Stbd (right side). Both of the engines run one propeller threw a common gear box. Two input shaft and one output shaft. I flew over to Guam and took over for another guy that couldn't take the heat anymore. 95+ in the engine room + 100% humidity - it was raining most of the time. I spent the month of Sept putting this back together with 3 other guys. It started as a overhaul that turned into a crankshaft change. It was one hell of a job!!!

This is the boat it was in.
 http://www.uscg.mil/d14/cgcSequoia/

This when we were pulling the crank out....this guy is standing on the valve covers of the other engine.

This what the gear box looks like. Those are companion flanges for the input from the flywheels.

Leave that pin where its at and build a small weld bead on top of it. Grind or file it off to the desired height and put your engine back together. It doesn't matter if its buried in the case and I think you'll do more damage trying to get it out. besides after you get it out then you have to find a longer pin or build it up under it.

VICTORY!

I've had some special solder and flux laying about, contains silver I believe, purchased for experimenting on repairing pits and scratches on otherwise decent fork tubes and brake pistons. This was a pain in the neck to track down because they changed its name (and bloody expensive), so note the name and part numbers if you're interested in it. The YouTube demo I saw of it showed a guy brazing two paperclips together with it and two guys could not pull them apart.

The solder is Lawson Products # CW1815

The flux (very nasty stuff) is Lawson Certainium 934 gel

So I used it to tack a cotter pin to the offending pins, let it cool, put some pliers on the cotter and with a good tug, off they came. Did them both for good measure.

Took 1/8 of an inch of the solder, bent it into a V, dropped it down the hole, laying flat. Flipped the pins over so the nice new unused edge and surface would be facing up, tapped on them to make certain they were all the way down, and voila.

Bearings now sit on the pins very positively, and will not cannot spin no way no how.

Putting the case halves back together later today, with all new seals elsewhere, moving on.
