Ride Report - I40 to Ashville Nc.
« on: October 31, 2013, 12:52:45 pm »
Rode down from Anderson, Indiana to the Tellico Plains for a nights rest at the Mountain View Cabins. (Which I would recommend, cheap and clean) The next morning I took SR33 thru Maryville to I-40, which turned out turned out to be a very scenic relaxing ride of the route. Once on I-40 thru the Smokey Mountains the speed, twist, turns, was the most exhilarating and butt puckering ride/route I have taken yet.

Was riding my 2012 Triumph Speedmaster with the old lady in tow.

We didnt have time to hit the dragon. I hear its 316 turns in 11 miles and just simply didnt have the time for 30mph on that route.
I did ride the Cherohala parkway I believe, partially, to get to the cabin but it was 10 at night, raining with fog, which completely sucked but thats riding.
I think 33 is what they call the foothills parkway.

The intended destination was to Myrtle beach, Murrells Inlet in South Carolina and then back up 77.
Virginia is pretty and that route thru the mountains is cake for any rider and there was hardly any traffic on the 77 route as well.

All in all think it was about 1620 miles round trip and if I get the chance to do it again Ill have a windsheild at least and maybe some beaded seat covers. haha
Approximately 400+ miles per day, two days to get to South Carolina and two days back to Indiana.

As for I-40, I would suggest a few years of exprience before tackling that beast.   :o

The ride through the dragon is not that bad, and a whole heck of a lot safer then running highway speeds on I-40.
Not to mention a whole lot shorter.
If you make it back through that way, stop by the Kickstand lodge and say hello to Mo. And if you really want to relax and eat some awesome homemade vitals, rent one of the little cabins by the creek.

I don't want to ride I-40 in a cage again.  Much less on two wheels.

Its a true test of dumbness. I was sore at the ankles and knees half hour in to the ride.

Ive got some tentative plans to do the popular routes next year with a great group of guys.
Should be fun!

We were in Asheville after Barber. The guy that specializes in RG's gave his selling pitch on NC roads. More miles of curvy paved roads than California  and fewer cops per capita and they aren't much bothering with traffic citations.

We were a few miles away from the dragon, and never saw it. Any of the roads there are just as windy I would think.

I havent been to the dragon or those routes but from what Ive seen in pictures they are in the heart of the mountains surrounded by trees and cutting thru valleys were as NC roads just southeast of there would mostly be more open and windy I would think. Theyre were some windy gusts on I40 when the road opens to the valleys. It was hard to not look out into the vastness when you need to keep your eyes planted on the road.

Hmm, the $240+ my partner and I each paid for an introduction to a N.C. state policeman going down to Barber leads me to feel otherwise concerning traffic citations. However, both NC and VA are amazing along the Blue Ridge.

I am less drawn to the dragon, which while a nice road and all is now very sedate, and touristy. Kind of like Disneyland for bikers.

Next time in NC make plans for a weekend at this place, you WON'T regret it or the ride!!!
http://www.ridersroost.com/index2.html
A beautiful ride from either side of the mountain,,,NC321 out of Lenoir to NC268 (eastside)  or 421 from Winston-Salem to Wilkesboro to catch 268.
Motorcycle ONLY campground, M/C towed sleeping quarters allowed.
We just closed the season with a BIG Halloween Blast.

NC seems to have a way of padding their citations. The fine was $50., court costs, wtf? $188. and fee for paying on line $10.

That being said, we deserved the ticket, which was for passing over the double yellow, and the cop, who was a good guy, did not charge us for speeding, which I believe was at speeds that were arrestable.
We were riding too hot, having come down the Blue Ridge very quickly the day before, as there was only a skeleton crew of rangers during the Federal furlough. The ticket had the desired effect, as we slowed down some, and made the rest of the trip without incident.

Lucky me lives a few miles from Lenoir (321) and works in Asheville. I get to blow up and down Old Fort Mtn on 40 as part of my daily commute.

If you go to Ashville you should schedule at least half a day for this museum,

I don't want to ride I-40 in a cage again.  Much less on two wheels.

In the mountain stretches, it is scary the amount of people who don't know how to drive anything but a straight line.  I don't know if I would feel comfortable on a bike around them.

I don't mind the mtn at all. Actually it surprises me how many drivers get racy with me after the mtn, usually on the eastbound side. Seems bubba in his hooptie civic thinks he can hang with a KZ1000 since he was able to hit 70 coming down the rock.
One little blip of the throttle usually cures them of the dream. And if they wanna go, I just let em and go back to cruising speed.
